If you want to guarantee profit, you can always enter the cycle of scavving and offline-PMCing/Practice Mode while your scav is on cooldown. Scavving can only make you money. Practice mode is great for learning maps, cache runs, getting good at killing scavs and crucial combat mechanics like hip-firing.

Try to do some quests until you can get some better weapons from higher level traders. Mosin is a really good weapon if you can hit your shots which it seems like you can. Unfortunately it seems like the guy who killed you had really good gear and even this late in the wipe it's relatively rare and you just got really unlucky.
