First reaction is fine. You should've then naded and pushed up at your left,( you can jump onto the bridge there). At the second engagement, your aim was ass, so you should probably run some offline raids and just practice shooting, also second engagement is hipfire range, don't toggle aim at that range. Also, ofcourse don't go into your inventory during fights unless you have to for some reason. (Popping stims, etc.). 
It's all about taking control away from your opponent. At the first engagement he is in control, he knows where you are and he has the high ground. By nading him, you force him to do something that he doesn't want to do (move out of his position) and by pushing up immediately you take away his high ground as well as making him have to readjust to your new position.
