The server (and other player) saw you a couple hundred milliseconds behind. Imagine there's a copy of you that lags behind a quarter of a second or so. This is called "peekers advantage" when used offensively. If you were to push a player holding a doorway then you would see them hundreds of milliseconds before you even appeared on their screen. It works to your advantage when being offensive, and against you when playing defensive. To offset it you have to move parallel or into the other player to even the odds and cancel it out.
