I can only find the vertical version when searching on google. Which makes sense if I care about directions, but I care about it fitting my monitor more, so I can actually see the map without having to constantly switch over to it and zoom in

I think they started making it vertical, so it makes sense that north is actually north. But imo, that's less useful than the map fitting your monitor

That's the exact reason as to why I event want a horizontal map in the first place. To stop having to pause the game to constantly zoom in/out

With a horizontal map, it fits my screen perfectly, and I can read all the text and see all the locations without having to zoom a single time

Fair. I started quite a bit before the compass was in the game. So I just got used to the old map orientations pretty quickly.
Outside of beginners, the only time directions matter imo, is when exctractions specifically mention a direction in it. Like "Southern road"
