well its up to you honestly every has their own risk tolerance and preference, I like the fact I can just wipe my vm or restore it whenever if i break stuff & still have my pc underlying for not being so disruptive

consider that you will frequently be opening ports for listeners and such so it's a very real risk but I have never actually heard of someone getting hacked through the platform

None serious (there have been a couple cc @serene trench). People portscanning is fairly frequent, and there have been one or two instances of someone getting attacked. I've yet to hear of one that has actually succeeded though.
As a general rule, connecting anything you care about into a network full of hackers isn't a great idea (see Defcon)

I would say being afraid of it is more a lack of understanding the risks than it is an actual threat

Given that Kali is pretty secure out of the box, it's not overly a problem

You should be mindful that you're on a network with people who might attack you, but it's like a hotel or cafe or similar really.
Running Kali where there's no services open by default makes you pretty safe

Unfortunately mass port scans are just name of the game these days. If you have a VPS at a cloud provider you will get 100x the random probes

I've personally investigated two potential attempts in my 11 months @ THM (and none within the last 9 months). We log all the traffic etc and work extensively with the user if any suspicion of attack is reported to us (:

Linux is relatively secure out of the box - unless you know how the standard linux security tools should be configured, there isn't much to be gained from using one distro over another.

Regarding the sludge bucket: put it someplace it can't spill and let it dry out. Some of those chemicals will catch fire if they dry out too fast. I would also call the local landfill and chemical disposal to ask for best local practices - you can't just throw it in the trash.
To clean brass, I'd go get a spray cleaner/polish and go to town with a rag

I did recently move to a new place, Georgia, from New Jersey (which is a 12 hour drive away) and I did feel lonely here for a bit. For me finding a Church that feels like home was important to me, and luckily I've found one and now I look forward to seeing those people on Sunday. I've also found Christian groups in the city that I've been involved with. Even if you are not religious, finding people who might share something with you might help. I wouldn't recommend doing anything you're not comfortable with (everybody goes at their own pace), but perhaps that could be something to consider? I guess the wildcard is covid, here in Georgia things are pretty open, although I'm not sure about the UK. I do know that a lot of people have been lonely the past year. @hoary briar

I dump all of that into an ansible playbook - that playbook also has directives to detect which distro, and install packages appropriately. It actually pares down the amount of unused tools by quite a lot, and makes my management of boxes much easier.

As someone who moved to a different country, I feel you. Take up some hobbies if you can, hobbies that will get you to meet people - personally I've done a fair amount of martial arts since I moved. Helped me getting myself to socialise with people I now call friends. You'll be able to find something in common with someone eventually. It's hard to make friends after a certain age, and as someone who is quite shy and struggles to get to know people, I know it's hard.

Owh thanks. This is nice. Didn't knew a script exists already. However I see that this script is quite limited. I was making something which was kind of modular and reads the list of tools to install from an external text file. The text file will already contain lots of tools and configs by default but as the list is being read from a text, the users can easily modify it and add or remove their own tools as needed without touching the source code.

I'm currently in encrytpion:crypto 101 room and dealing with SSH and stuck there because of confusion. What is the main difference between ssh public key and private key because one can access the server/machine with the shared public key, then how it becomes different from private key?
I tried many times understanding this but couldn't. Anyone to clear up the things?😁

It is based on mathematics of modulus. You can create the public key out of a private key. The private key acts as a validation while we use it to authenticate in SSH

Dutch should be pretty easy yeah if you speak English. The pronunciation will take a bit of time to get used to but they are very similar languages. Once you know Dutch you can ezpz learn German too and understand languages like Norwegian easier

I don't entirely agree with that. It's good entry-level learning (up maybe until A2 in the CEFR), especially if you don't know a word in the given language. A2 is, however, still pretty basic, there I'm with you.

Guys I am learning some words while getting cheers in the background and some fake internet points ... this is perfect for my learning style, when things get serious ill just transition to getting a certificate of proficiency in said language, but for now I am happy just joking around with my friends throwing random gibberish at them

Can vouch for this. I was doing a German A2 level course in my university, and it stops exactly where Duolingo German ends. There's official testing for CEFR B1 and above for German, so Duo still falls some way short of an official language proficiency measure.

But, if you get to A2, at that point you might as well go the distance and try to B2!

Difficulty being a weight of how in depth do i need to know the material? Do i need to be able to create my own payloads and scripts or do I just need to be able to understand how a certain topic works? Any and all input is helpful (if you have a lot to say Direct Messages are open and welcomed)

B1/B2 is a pretty big jumo though, I wouldn't underestimate that. But if you are doing Duolingo, and taking everyrhing seriously, and looking up extra stuff on your own, then B1 is not out of reach.

progrraming your site is absoloutely terrific , just don't do it while you are still learning

I recommend using jekyll on github pages ,its arguably the easiest way to have a simple stunning functional portfolio that you can modify later

html and css are awesome just don't spend much time on them unless yu wanna be a front end dev, you are in a cyper security training discord, maybe something like a bit of python + javascript+ html is more useful (just get the basics rn)

git is easy, if you are struggling with t rn, just download github gui and use it for a while to get a feel for the thing, then slowley get comfortable with using it from the cli, however git can get complicated some times even for experts so yea take it easy on yourself

anyone here take the PWK? Are you able to search up commands or do you have to have all the syntax memorized for every command you use? Like for example a socat listener, if you arent sure of the syntax can you google the command and copy and paste it?

Why would you not be able to search stuff up in PWK? PWK is the training material -- you go through it at your own pace before the exam

But yes, OSCP (and every other practical exam I've heard of) is open book. You can use whatever resources you like -- as long as it doesn't involve something like someone else's exam report, which you should not have anyway.

That said, take your own notes of these things. You should never have to Google the same information twice.

I’m going through the what the shell room and I’m having a lot of trouble remembering all the syntax involved in making a proper encrypted listener. That’s just an example there’s a lot of stuff that I’m having trouble remembering

I do both. I use a note taking app for some things, and I keep a physical notebook for others. Most of my daily notes about things that I don't need to keep long term I take on a calcuation pad, because a lot of that is diagrams and high level stuff. Detailed implementation notes and thoughts go into either a permanent bound notebook, or into a digital format depending on what it's for.

IE, if an employer is willing to pay for my notebooks, they get to keep the physical copy when I quit

Obsidian is great... Until you start learning lower-level Windows stuff.
As soon as you start putting snippets of malware in an obsidian notebook, your AV will throw a fit and start deleting your scripts.
