well, don't use capslock and we should get along just fine

charred cliff
#

sorry if this is the wrong place for this but, is a separate VM for THM really necessary? i have an installation of a linux distro on my pc which i'd much rather use directly. have there been any actual attacks on someone via the THM network?

lilac gust
#

it'd be relatively low risk, and that's up to you, if you take low risks often enough..

#

is the Linux Distro on your PC also a pc you use for work or anything else or separate?

charred cliff
lilac gust
#

well its up to you honestly every has their own risk tolerance and preference, I like the fact I can just wipe my vm or restore it whenever if i break stuff & still have my pc underlying for not being so disruptive

#

consider that you will frequently be opening ports for listeners and such so it's a very real risk but I have never actually heard of someone getting hacked through the platform

I feel slightly deterred from using the site after reading that, would the attack box be a more secure option for usage?

I would say being afraid of it is more a lack of understanding the risks than it is an actual threat

radiant jacinth

You should be mindful that you're on a network with people who might attack you, but it's like a hotel or cafe or similar really.
Running Kali where there's no services open by default makes you pretty safe

serene trench

serene trench
#

There's protocols /ruling in place so that i.e. users from one vpn server shouldn't be able to communicate with a device on another vpn server but obvs if you share a vpn server then it's slightly different

serene trench
lilac gust
#

yeah asking questions is about it is never bad

serene trench
#

imho it's no where near as bad at all in comparsion to toher places where you share a VM with others to hack

radiant jacinth
lilac gust
#

I've only completed like 1/4 of the content on THM but I've never had anyone try connect to a listener or webserver and if they did i'd almost assume they just typoed their own ip more than malicious activity but i'd report it if I saw it

Here's some standard tools you should look into and play around with: firewalld, AIDE, SELinux, AppArmor

If you decide you want to roll your own Ubuntu VM, uninstall UFW and use firewalld.

I don't pretend to know exactly how you're feeling, but I hope we can give some support to you. For me finding a Church that feels like home was important to me, and luckily I've found one and now I look forward to seeing those people on Sunday. I've also found Christian groups in the city that I've been involved with. Even if you are not religious, finding people who might share something with you might help. I wouldn't recommend doing anything you're not comfortable with (everybody goes at their own pace), but perhaps that could be something to consider? I guess the wildcard is covid, here in Georgia things are pretty open, although I'm not sure about the UK. I do know that a lot of people have been lonely the past year. @hoary briar

Hey guys. I'm making an Initial kali setup script which will automatically install all the required useful Software and make some useful configurations to the system so that you won't have to do it manually everytime you do a fresh install of the distro. As someone who moved to a different country, I feel you. Take up some hobbies if you can, hobbies that will get you to meet people - personally I've done a fair amount of martial arts since I moved. Helped me getting myself to socialise with people I now call friends. You'll be able to find something in common with someone eventually. It's hard to make friends after a certain age, and as someone who is quite shy and struggles to get to know people, I know it's hard.

# supple mauve As someone who moved to a different country, I feel you. Take up some hobbies if...

+1, when I was feeling really alone after I quit school I party crashed a LAN party and I have some friends for life now. Finding some common ground with other people is much easier than trying to just meet others. Just as how a church can be common ground, so can a poetry night or music class. For example https://www.meetup.com/ has meetups all over the world you can join virtually or irl, and maybe you'll find people there! Social situations exhaust me but I really got some value out of it.

Owh thanks. This is nice. Didn't knew a script exists already. However I see that this script is quite limited. I was making something which was kind of modular and reads the list of tools to install from an external text file. The text file will already contain lots of tools and configs by default but as the list is being read from a text, the users can easily modify it and add or remove their own tools as needed without touching the source code.

It doesn't matter whether maliciously or not. I just want to build a vocabulary for myself. Because I'm extremely interested in such things and I wonder how some people manage to have access to a network for weeks.

In general, the question is also: Because I've heard from some official white hats that they sometimes try to get into a network for weeks / months.
I'd be interested to know how they "save" their progress, if you know what I mean.

html and css are awesome just don't spend much time on them unless yu wanna be a front end dev, you are in a cyper security training discord, maybe something like a bit of python + javascript+ html is more useful (just get the basics rn)

git is easy, if you are struggling with t rn, just download github gui and use it for a while to get a feel for the thing, then slowley get comfortable with using it from the cli, however git can get complicated some times even for experts so yea take it easy on yourself

Thatโ€™s just an example thereโ€™s a lot of stuff that Iโ€™m having trouble remembering

#

I donโ€™t think I would be able to type it from memory at this point, I still have to copy and paste information where Iโ€™m at now. Wondering if typing commands from memory is a must have or if that just โ€œproper procedureโ€

Hmm noted. Any tips on taking notes? Or anywhere I can research the topic? (Google obviously Ik). Is sublime a good option for note taking or do you have a physical notebook?

im headed on a road trip, wondering if anyone knows any audiobooks related to infosec, hacking, etc... that are worth the time?

IE, if an employer is willing to pay for my notebooks, they get to keep the physical copy when I quit

When I left my job in infosec, I had filled up 7 graph rule composition books with notes, for example.

#

Doesn't obsidian have an encrypted vault option too?

quaint basin

Not last I checked, nope

or is that only a paid feature

One of the primary reasons I take physical notes is information control; in the past I have needed to write down sensitive things that I could not allow to touch an infrastructure-monitored work PC.

They have a lot of cool resources and websites and tools but theyโ€™re all specifically for Kali. Any other distro and they most likely will tell you to google your questions (unless someone nice answers you)

So I have read the 5pillars thing, and decided to learn computer fundamentals first. I have one thing saved on browser called OSSU, if you ever heard before. Do you recommend it to me to study?

I think I am going to give up ๐Ÿ˜”

Everyone here is pro and I am here knowing nothing about infosec.

I am so lost in all this thing.

scarlet moth

You could give upโ€ฆ itโ€™s your choice then in a year youโ€™ll know nothing more than you know today or you could do what the โ€˜prosโ€™ have doneโ€ฆ learned a little every day for years and grew their knowledge and skills to become pros

Sounds like a discussion with a doctor is in order

But you can also choose where what energy you have goes toโ€ฆ it could go to complaining on discord or it could go to learning

I don't know if this is the place for this, but I am happy to see how this website has evolved so much.

It's so cool to see the progress that has been made. I took a long time off from CyberSecurity and all that, and coming back with all of these new rooms and pathways is pretty damn cool.

Alrighty, I choose following the second path.

Hey Miuri where can I install trillium at? Iโ€™m seeing a lot of different sites offering similar packages and I want to install the correct one (pls ping)

I mainly care for syntax highlighting. Even though I donโ€™t code it makes it somewhat easier to understand and I hope syntax highlighting can help me subconsciously learn as I continue to read. If that makes sense?

scarlet moth

half fractal
scarlet moth

also if you use markdown with VSCode, you can also get syntax highlighting

mortal venture

Bleh thank you again

scarlet moth
#

the primarily thing I don't like about Trilium is it sticks your notes in some obscure folder on Macs, a folder that is not backed up to icloud

half fractal
#

obsidian has syntax highlighting in the preview mode, and for editor mode it also exists but not for all languages, a plugin fixes it for most
