I got a pi for Christmas, still not sure what I want to do with it yet. I was thinking it would be cool to stuff like hardware hacking with it. I've heard of people hacking cars with them and stuff. Then I realized I needed a car to hack, beside my old Ford

steel plover
#

there are thousands of PI projects, they keep on seeming to pop up

north roost
#

i think any sort of embedded system that interfaces with some GPIO sensor is a good project to start with for Pis

tawdry dove
#

I'm slowly working through to create a custom timelapse rig with my pi. I have it connected to an A7ii and using it to control the shutter

#

I still have to do some testing but I should be able to control everything besides the focus as I don't have any AF lenses lol

#

Eventually a sliding rail will be added as well as some LIDAR and maybe a sonar element to track subjects through the timelapse

remote sail
#

Two good uses for a pi: a PiHole, and a PiCade (RetroPi)

potent isle
#

Also a portable kali pi, but its better if you got an screen

#

The complete kit for a portable kali pi, is a rpi, screen (touch is better) a case for your rpi, a foldable keyboard and a power bank

#

Iโ€™ve made a portable kali pi, and i like it a lot, still cant use it outside from my house, but meh, still like it

What. The. Duck. I just sat through an hour of DC traffic to pick up what I thought would be my complete glasses order. I got a text saying that my order had arrived and was ready for pickup. No. They send you a text and email PER ITEM๐Ÿคฌ

scarlet moth
#

why your eye glass place so far away

remote sail
#

Why are they shipping it separately? Ordering glasses from Ikea? Self assembly required?

scarlet moth
#

although I shouldn't speak, I'm driving almost an hour to go to a dentist next week ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

remote sail
#

good dentists are worth a drive, imo

quaint basin
#

@scarlet moth @remote sail probably better shifting here ๐Ÿ™‚

scarlet moth
#

yes

#

also, some lemon juice or orange juice in a tofu marinade is good

quaint basin
#

Aye, no personal chef I don't think -- I like cooking, but not that much

remote sail
#

I was surprised you didn't hit the off-topic button an hour ago, Muiri. You're usually on that ๐Ÿ™‚

quaint basin
#

Yeah, I've tried orange tofu -- it's an interesting taste. Definitely not unpleasant though

Meh, we're keeping stuff relaxed just now ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

uhh i think someone posted a crash gif in general

On it

scarlet moth

seriously, if I had lots of money, like millions of dollars, I'd totally hire a chef

radiant jacinth
#

thx

remote sail
#

oh absolutely

scarlet moth
#

full time live in chef is my money dream

remote sail
#

100%

#

well, not live-in

scarlet moth
#

maybe someone could drop off food daily, I dunno

remote sail
#

but someone to come cook and prep, in coordination with my nutritionist and trainer, sure

scarlet moth
#

you can get some home delivery stuff that is pretty close to that these days but I wanna be like 'hey I'm feeling like... ' and get it

remote sail
#

yeah

#

just have them come by every day at the same time. Or get em a pager

#

totally doing that when I win the lotto

quaint basin
#

Aha, yeah, that's the dream

remote sail
#

I want a bigger gym too. Maybe someday

scarlet moth
#

I want like the Rock's gym

remote sail
#

I haven't seen it. got a pic?

scarlet moth
#

some people want pools with their homes, I want a huge ass gym

remote sail
#

I converted the biggest room in my house to a gym. Spent maybe 20k? ish?

#

commercial gym floor, the whole deal.

scarlet moth
#

maybe his isn't his own personal gym but anytime he posts pictures on Instagram, it is just him in it

remote sail
#

I'd love a treadpool, tbh.

#

It probably IS his own gym. He could afford to spend a few mill for that

scarlet moth
#

yeah but its kind of weird that it really looks like a commercial gym, not so much that pic

tawdry dove
scarlet moth
#

its almost like he bought a commercial gym for his own use

scarlet moth
remote sail
#

So I don't have instagram, but yeah, I could totally see a need for multiple benches

#

heck, I have two (granted, I want to get rid of one because I don't have space for two, but)

scarlet moth
#

I wish there was a way to share pictures outside of instagram

remote sail
#

I want to get more dumbbells, tbh. That and a good gym mirror might be my next big investments there

#

If you're on windows, win-shift-s to screenshot, and copy/paste

scarlet moth
#

oh duh one sec

#

I wasn't even thinking a screenshot

#

multiple benches

remote sail
#

oh that's totally a home gym

tawdry dove
remote sail
#

I know the exact floor tiles he is using

scarlet moth
#

that first picture makes me believe its a home gym, this second one I had doubts but the polynesian flag of the first one is like uhh yeah

remote sail
#

If you're into fitness, check out athleanx.com. I love his programs. Good Youtube channel too

tawdry dove
#

They aren't as defined in this photo but it was the first one lol

burnt night
#

Didn't skip leg day for sure

scarlet moth
#

yeah that quad photo of the Rock, my husband sent me that one the other day

#

let me tell you, I totally missed anything else in that picture than the quads

remote sail
#

when your quads are bigger than your head, you've done something either very wrong, or very right ๐Ÿค”

tawdry dove
#

I've got big quads, but these dudes have continent sized quads

#

All of the cyclists do

remote sail
#

as a former ironman and ultramarathoner and someone who has put a lot of miles/time in on both... those legs aren't natural

quaint basin
#

How did this go from lovely vegan food to cyclists' quads..?

scarlet moth
#

ha ha

#

sorry talking about the gym, then the rock's gym

quaint basin
#

I step out for five minutes to deal with a crash GIF smh

remote sail
#

speaking of, what was the story with that?

tawdry dove
scarlet moth
#

Athlean-x looks interesting... I've been looking for a workout for women that wasn't baby weights

tawdry dove
#

Isn't athlean-x in some controversy right now?

remote sail
#

I can't speak to his women program. But honestly, if you've done crossfit, any of his program would work for you

#

is it? I haven't heard

tawdry dove
#

It might be him but I think it was about peddling bogus material and claiming to be natty?

#

And a large portion of the fitness Youtube/other communities basically told him to stop

remote sail
#

I think people have claimed he's on steroids or whatever, for a long time. Personally, I don't think so. But having done his programs for like... 6-7yrs or so, I can tell you, they work

#

I'm wondering if maybe you are thinking of someone else, Moose

tawdry dove
#

Maybe I'll Google when I get home

remote sail
#

He's pretty well respected, from what I've seen

#

Yeah, I'm genuinely curious. If you find out, let me know.

tawdry dove
#

I still can't decide if nick bare is natty. I'm leaning towards definite no at this point

scarlet moth
#

well I'm getting my vaccine tomorrow, if I feel ok, maybe order it or else wait til the vaccine sickness wears off

remote sail
#

I'd be happy to chat and answer questions or even show you some of the program content if you want

#

Not affiliated with them or getting a kickback or anything, just happy with the products I've purchased

scarlet moth
#

for the women's program, there are video clips

remote sail
#

I've heard the women's program was a little disappointing for some. I haven't seen it personally

scarlet moth
#

oh boo

tawdry dove
#

I've been happy with Soflete. That's what I'm using. It's an app with workouts and nutrition. They have women's portions in there too

scarlet moth
#

well I'll look, honestly I put lifting on the back burner cuz I started running again

#

and my legs and abs have been so sore from running

tawdry dove
#

Basically the only difference is weight and also height for jumps and raised lifts

remote sail
#

The thing I like about the A-X programs is that it's not just about 'lifting weights', it's about building functional strength, so it's a lot of multi-plane movements

tawdry dove
#

Same with Soflete lol

#

Ive done some weird ass movements

remote sail
#

how $$ is it?

scarlet moth
#

I was also looking at renaissance periodization, but I dunno, I did their at home program before and liked it

tawdry dove
#

$30 a month for workouts, nutrition, and supplemental modules

remote sail
#

well like I said, I'd be happy to show you around the portal and some of the programs, you can decide if it's what you're looking for

scarlet moth
#

yeah I'll look into a bit and let you know

remote sail
#

the A-X programs are usually like $80-100 for a 90 day program

#

but with lifetime access

#

and for ab work, he has an app that's probably the best $6 I've ever spent

#

workouts are usually about 6-8 minutes long. I don't think I've ever in my life done a full workout without dropping a rep.

tawdry dove
#

So this is what they call a quick view, the actual workout has boxes that you check and fill in weights but this is what I have tomorrow. I'm on a bodybuilding cycle and this picture crops the stamina portion of the workout as well.

remote sail
#

One of the things that I like about A-X, which I kinda thought was stupid at first, is the walkthrough videos. He has a "long" full workout walkthrough video each day (no more than say 6-8 minutes, tops, just demo'ing each exercise and what to focus on/feel/etc), but also a mini clip next to each exercise in the display, so you can scroll down and watch like a 15 second reminder for the form

#

and he talks about the keys for the exercises, how to do it with the proper form, etc. I found that useful.

tawdry dove
#

Yeah if you click into the workout Soflete made a bunch of videos of the exercises

tawdry dove
#

Didn't expect that one

remote sail
#

oh, he mentioned that in some vid a while back. I don't want to make it seem like I'm defending him, and I have no connection to him, and I don't know the truth. But what I CAN say is this: I do believe he's legit. And just me personally, I've used several of his programs, bought several more that I've yet to use, and have been a happy customer

#

I think the 'fake weights' thing came from his demo videos. Lemme find the link.

#

I can't find it right now, but I'll keep looking. Bottom line, I think he makes good programs. And as someone who has had a LOT of injuries from various sports/etc. over the years, I appreciate the "injury-prooofing" in the A-X programs. That alone is with gold to me.

Muiri, I know its simple but I'm making roasted asparagus...

quaint basin
#

Oooh

#

Have you tried seared asparagus?

scarlet moth
#

no, but that sounds yum

steel plover
#

do you do your seared asparagus under the broiler or on a grill

lilac gust
#

i don't cook much or often but i do like asparagus with a little oil and salt on a skillet

inner aurora
lilac gust
#

well, the skillet having the divets kind of helps with the texture and avoids burning the entire thing

scarlet moth
#

sure, I just put some olive oil and soy sauce and put it in the toaster oven

steel plover
#

I like the little oil and salt, but on the grill is my favorite method

inner aurora
tawdry dove

You then choose a category and there are programs that you can select from and they tell you the function of the program. Mass increase, muscle imbalance correction, speed, stability, etc

#

all my friends who have done Marathons have said never again...

#

I'm doing a (virtual) 10k in July

remote sail
#

maybe a few years from starting running to doing my first full? Plus a few more years to doing my first ultra?

#

there was a time I was doing a marathon (or more) 5-6 days a week

scarlet moth
#

I just like running, its fun and meditative

quaint basin

Running hurts

steel plover
remote sail

it can, yes. At this point, I've put so many miles on my knees, I don't run much anymore. Plus injuries from skydiving, skiing, etc.

tawdry dove
#

I can swim really fast

#

Running not so much

remote sail
#

running was my favorite discipline within triathlon. Even though I love the water.

#

you learn a lot about yourself when you've been moving for a few hours. And are just getting started ๐Ÿ™‚

steel plover

with all the healthy eating and exercise, this is going to be THM soon

remote sail

Do duh Doo da dooo

remote sail
tawdry dove
#

I know

#

Then you hit 6 and go "this sucks", 8 is "fml", and then 10 you get a resurgence and feel like you can do another 10

remote sail
#

when I was doing marathons, I'd usually hit a wall in the low 20s. Mile 22 or so. And sometimes somewhere in the teens.

#

after that, it's just suffering, tbh. I've done a few 50 milers. They hurt. A lot.

tawdry dove
#

I just watched a doc on Leadville. That looks brutal

remote sail
#

rucking was harder for me. The weight on the shoulders/back killed

tawdry dove
#

36 hours of running

scarlet moth
#

Iโ€™m slow but still like running

remote sail
#

I have a friend who has done leadville. She says it sucks, but it's beautiful

remote sail
tawdry dove

Leadville is a 100 miler in Colorado for anyone who isn't familiar

scarlet moth

Yeah I read Born to Run

remote sail
#

oh if you want running books, I can go over to my bookshelf and get you a few good ones

tawdry dove
scarlet moth
#

Iโ€™m fascinated by ultra running even if I know itโ€™s not for me

remote sail
#

don't be so sure

#

tbh, some of the best ultra runners I know are women

#

again, it's really not about speed- you're competing against yourself. And it's (at least for me) entirely about the mental game, and figuring out how to push yourself way past failure

#

seems women tend to be better at that than most men

#

I've heard a lot of people say that it relates to childbirth, too, that somehow women are better able to turn off those parts of the brain that every ultra runner knows

tawdry dove
#

Then you have the dudes that rowed to Antarctica too

tawdry dove
#

I would assume so

#

Im crying after 30 minutes on the rowing machine. This is just incredible

remote sail
#

yeah, I got a water rower to replace my running and cycling. Better workout, better for my body

#

I can't imagine doing that for, say, 8 hours. Let alone 8 hours/day for 70 days

tawdry dove
#

I'm waiting for that stimmy and tax return and then I'm going to buy a bike

remote sail
#

I got a tri bike I'll sell ya ๐Ÿ™‚ carbon fiber and super light

tawdry dove

That and the competition

remote sail
lilac gust
#

12.5kms or something

#

maybe a little less, over 12, under 13

remote sail
remote sail
#

different people will tell you different things about how to train for it. What's your current running schedule like? how many days per week, what distances each day?

lilac gust
#

when i just do my own thing i do around 20-25kms a week, 4-5k's a run, (australia so K's)

tawdry dove
#

I remember I when I ran 24 miles in a week. I thought I was going to die

remote sail
#

so like a 5k, 5x a week?

lilac gust
#

yep, though I just did the first week of this 14 week plan

#

and I've tried this plan before but I bombed out with a foot injury

remote sail
#

so it's POSSIBLE to go from that to a marathon by september, but honestly, I think you'd be risking injury. Especially if you have a history of injury

sonic lark
#

i walk a lot, not much of a runner though. But i have walked a few too many miles in my days

remote sail
#

You'd be better off setting a goal of a half marathon for september, which is still a pretty big thing to work up to

lilac gust
#

yeah look I'll play it safe and train for the half, I'm not actually prone to injury just last october I trod on something and kept running thinking it was just a random pain

remote sail
#

and I say this as someone who has broken feet, ankles, ruptured achilles tendons, and more.

sonic lark
#

those are the ones which hurt the most too

lilac gust
#

but it was actually more likely a small fracture lol

remote sail
#

soft tissue takes longer to heal

sonic lark
#

good thing you can still walk

#

i wouldn't an couldn't do the pain of a ruptured achillies tendon

remote sail

that was probably one of my more stupid stubborn moments.

tawdry dove
#

I slipped off a mountain and tore both my patellars. Not all the way through thankfully

sonic lark
#

an must've hurt also

remote sail
#

in my younger years, I absolutely refused to quit. And I destroyed my body many times with that mindset until I grew a brain and started being smarter about things

tawdry dove
#

Went and played volleyball afterwards and let me just say it didn't feel great lol

sonic lark
#

ouh that sounds bad also, wtf are you peopling doing? living such dangerous lifes lol

#

i break nothing, i hermit my life

๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ I've also had a couple of concussions recently. One from rugby and then another, on a mountain, by skiing off an unmarked cliff on a green trail

interesting, i've thought about the military path. just did bad choices an didn't finish school when i was younger. bad mistake on my part, Never too late too go back, Just not something I think i want too do honestly

tawdry dove

I was within the trail boundaries too and I know this because they literally had the trail roped in

remote sail

I mean, I've been on double blacks that don't have drops like that

tawdry dove

remote sail

I've lost track of how many of those I've had

vagrant harbor
#

Okay

#

Let me see thanks

winged moon
#

what happens behind the scenes when one launches a machine?

burnt night
#

An EC2 instance is deployed from the image stored on THM, then you get given the IP.

winged moon
#

so there is some cloud formation template ? autoscaling group? yaml stuff? or ?

autumn trout
#

Yes, the image is stored as an AMI and when you click launch, it launches it

#

no yaml or cloudformation or autoscaling for the average room I believe

#

just an API call

#

when you convert in the thm upload, it's converting to ami image :-)

winged moon
#

so there is a javascript function which sends a request to the api gateway of the tryhackme aws organization which then deploys the image and returns the allocated IP within the thm vpn ..

autumn trout
#

@winged moon There is a function that sends a request to AWS which deploys it, and that function reads the deployed IP address.

That IP address is in the virtual private cloud of THM on AWS, and the only way to access that cloud is via the VPN

#

fwiw the rest of THM, the actual servers, would be in a different virtual private cloud so you'd never interact with them in your VPN cloud :D

#

actual servers == website servers

winged moon
#

that's cool architectural stuff

autumn trout
#

@winged moon look into AWS firecracker. In the distant future it may be possible to deploy machines in under 1 second, entire networks in mere seconds too ๐ŸŽ‰

winged moon
#

Yeah, i'm currently learning AWS that's why I was curious that sounds cool

remote sail
#

I'd actually be quite curious to know more about how they've put it together as well, since I have a few aws certs and do some of that for my real job

autumn trout
remote sail
#

yeah, I can make guesses too, but they are just guesses ๐Ÿ™‚

#

I'd be curious about how they segment their network- how many VPCs, how they are configured, etc. Particularly since there are rooms and networks (like wreath), which behave differently

#

but then also stuff like cost optimization- there are a ton of tricks for that, but I'd be curious to see if they do stuff I haven't thought/heard of

rapid summit

I've done all my training in Finland with people I know (or with people that they say are worthy), so I've had pretty good experiences.

#

But with some of the holiday resort diving shops, it's been... dangerous.

#

Or at least careless. I know how to stay within my limits, but some people might not.

tawdry dove
#

Yeah it's always been kind of the next logical step for me water wise. I did the whole lifeguard and water safety instructor thing and I feel diving is the next level up

#

Ngl it's weird to think how many kids and adults I taught how to swim

rapid summit
#

I think the most important things to think about when diving are to stay calm and to stay within your comfort zone. If you feel it's not good, don't do it.

tawdry dove
#

Yeah I'm fairly at home in the water but that's definitely a good tip

Don't feel that you're being lazy. Intro To Networking is a very theory heavy room, so it's natural that it includes lots of text. However, take it bit by bit, and perhaps a little at a time, and you'll see how much you can learn! I wouldn't recommend skipping to another room though, as networking is the most fundamental topic in cyber.

I agree with @gray trellis, in college, we had a whole semester dedicated to Networking (and I didn't comprehend a lot of stuff until I started hacking). Doing a crash course of it in a few THM rooms will feel like a lot

Honestly, your frustrations are understandable. There's a lot of theory for a beginner but it gets better. Also, you don't need to understand everything 100%, by doing rooms and research, you'll get to understand them

Youโ€™re not lazy! Youโ€™re already taking time to try and learn new skills. Thatโ€™s the opposite of laziness. ๐Ÿ™‚ Learning new stuff can be a challenge, especially when itโ€™s all new. Itโ€™s okay and normal to feel like your brain is melting with information overload sometimes, especially when itโ€™s a crash course on a really huge topic. Hi Friend, if you are a visual/audio learner, and learn best via videos, there are some great YouTube videos to learn the basics. For Network Pentesting, The Cyber Mentor is good (he also has a course which he'll sometimes give away for free). For web hacking, LiveOverflow seems to have a good playlist (I haven't watched it, but his technical explanations are the best imo), and Hackersploit has a decent web one as well. My biggest 'missed opportunity' in IT is that I will probably never work for level 3 - thus I can never assign 8.67.53.09 to anything

Yes, but you'd also have to work for Level 3

It'd be worth it if I could somehow take ownership of that one IP address.

It's part of the 8.x.x.x class A address

tawdry dove

Today is sous vide pork again

#

Maybe I'll microwave sweet potatoes

rapid summit

I'll use that pizza sauce for some kind of a mix everything and make pasta dish. Italians will be mad at me.

scarlet moth
#

its all good

tawdry dove
#

Yeah only fake Italians will care

#

You make due with what you have

steel plover
#

I don't like pasta, but you can use the pizza sauce to make a tomato sauce for rice

tawdry dove
#

That would probably be pretty good

#

I've got arborio rice but I haven't used it yet

scarlet moth
#

only if you claim it isn't Mexican rice

tawdry dove
#

Huh? Arborio rice is Italian rice

#

Or was that for the tomato rice

scarlet moth
#

Italians use tomato sauce with rice?

steel plover
#

I'm not italian, but I do rice for as much as I can

tawdry dove
#

My grandmother never made it but I don't see why not

#

Both ingredients were grown in the region

#

It wasn't a tomato sauce in the rice but my grandmother would put tomatoes in the risotto

scarlet moth
#

when you make mexican rice, you cook it with a tomato sauce... so you toast the rice in oil, then add an 8 oz can of tomato sauce, some water, some salt, spices and sometimes some peas+carrots

burnt night
#

That sounds good

tawdry dove
#

I absolutely despise peas

scarlet moth
#

its optional, my family doesn't do it

#

I forgot onions, you sautee the rice til it starts to get brown, then you add some chopped onions, then tomato sauce, water, salt and spices

spark sun
#

marinara sauce or tomato paste?

tawdry dove

Yeah my great grandfather made it to 99 and 11 months

#

And then another made it to 100

scarlet moth
#

my grandma still has many living siblings, all in their 90s and my grandfather's siblings are still alive even if my grandfather isn't

tawdry dove
#

Pretty sure the one that made it to 100 was in the mob

scarlet moth
#

ha

#

my grandma's eldest sister just had a birthday but don't think she is 100

north roost
#

but tbf most of my great-grandparents had several siblings who died of typhus or other old-timey diseases

scarlet moth
#

my grandma had a few old timey diseases including TB

#

but she had some siblings when she was young that didn't make it out of childhood, which was the norm... think she had 4 siblings die under the age of 5

tawdry dove

Yeah you don't really get a choice

scarlet moth

I mean like y'all have a big ass building in DC and a freeway exit that says "FBI here", you could say something a bit more specific

tawdry dove

Chilimac

remote sail
#

the good ol' days

remote sail
tawdry dove
#

Yeah i thought intubate was coming in from the mouth into the lungs

remote sail
#

correct

#

there are two types of collapsed lungs- hemothorax and pneumothorax. First one is because there's blood in the chest cavity, which "squishes" the balloon that is the lungs. The second is because there is air in the chest cavity. This usually happens because either the lungs have been punctured or ruptured, and they are leaking into the chest cavity when you try to breathe, or because the chest cavity itself has been punctured from the outside, and air is leaking in from the outside. Either way, the solution is to drain the chest cavity and let the lungs reinflate, which doesn't always happen. So he likely would have ALSO been intubated in order to force air back into the lungs and get them to reinflate. There are actually 5 sub-chambers or lobes of the lungs.
