#

Nah for actual backpacking

#

Testing gear on the terrace though sounds a lot better than going on shorter hikes and testing there lol

rapid summit
#

Apparently I overestimated the price, it was around 80โ‚ฌ ๐Ÿ™‚

tawdry dove
#

I do want one of those alpine Mats though

rapid summit
#

But what bag would that be? I think I'll just get a tent for this summer, but might upgrade my other gear at some point.

#

3kg backpack and 2kg sleeping bag is also pretty much to haul around - even for these reasonably small climbs.

tawdry dove
#

I forget the name of the bag. I remember it's obnoxiously orange, made in the USA in Colorado I believe

#

I'll find it when I get home

#

Oh it might actually be the Western mountaineering bags

rapid summit
#

At least Katabatic seems to make ultralight sleeping quilts, but do they make bags as well...

tawdry dove

Those sound familiar

I don't think ive had that type before. It's not really native to the US eastern seaboard

It's Mediterranean

Good fish but it does not support overcooking at all

Yeah we've mainly got Cod here

Cod is good too :D

tawdry dove

I'm not sure what the fish for Virginia is

twin ridge

Probably cod as well :D

tawdry dove

But Massachusetts has a place called Cape Cod kekw

Yeah I know

#

Cape cod is reasonably well known

There's also a welcoming ritual in Newfoundland which involves Screech and a cod.

twin ridge

tawdry dove
#

Nope

#

We did the Trans Canadian Parkway from Quebec to Moncton

twin ridge

Not much in Moncton sadly

tawdry dove

And then dropped down into Maine from moncton and accidentally went offroading in a Honda odyssey

#

The Walmart in moncton saved my but

twin ridge

Haha

tawdry dove

I thought i popped a tire at the Bay of Fundy and had to haul butt back to Moncton while trying to avoid getting pulled over by RCMP

#

Pretty sure I just slipped the bead and they just "warrantied" the tire

#

Didn't cost me a dime

twin ridge

tawdry dove

Yeah..... An empty snow covered parking lot + yelling "Tokyo Drift!" while two-stepping the Odyssey around a corner = hitting an unseen curb under the snow like a dummy

tawdry dove
#

Sorry I don't have 3 days to sit at a gas station to charge my car

#

Before someone takes that literally I know it doesn't take 3 days to charge an electric car

burnt night
#

Arguably, if you're driving far enough that you need to charge it then you should probably be taking breaks on that journey

tawdry dove
#

The US is pretty big. 200 miles is nothing

burnt night
#

300 miles, at 60mph, is 5 hours?

#

You should definitely be taking a break

tawdry dove
#

Specifically idk how long it takes the id3 to charge but I drive 100 miles everyday for work. The range is around 200 miles for the vehicle which means there isn't even a guarantee that I would have enough to drive two days

burnt night
#

Charge it at work?

tawdry dove
#

I'd have to go to the local gas station every day for probably an hour just to drive the vehicle

#

No chargers at or near work

burnt night
#

The range is 336 miles

#

217 miles of range in a 30 minute charge.

tawdry dove
#

And i live in an apartment complex with jo chargers or outlets for electrical vehicles

#

Where are you seeing those numbers?

#

Wikipedia says 205 miles

burnt night
tawdry dove
#

Ah I guess there are different batteries

#

Without the battery upgrade it's 200

burnt night
#

Different trim levels have different batteries, motors, and chargers

tawdry dove
#

That's another argument lol. Limiting battery capacity and the effectiveness of the car to higher trims

#

Idk of any gas cars that give smaller tanks to base models

burnt night
#

A larger tank for a petrol car is a tiny bit more raw material. Dollars extra cost at most.

#

the effectiveness of the car to higher trims - U sure? That's what better engines do. My last car had a 1L as the base model, bigger engines with turbos for higher trims.

tawdry dove
#

Right i understand that argument

#

When I say effectiveness I mean range specifically

#

You use a car to get from point a to point b. Performance upgrades I would consider a different section

burnt night
#

You're driving 100 miles each way every day and can't charge an electric car. NGL, you're definitely not the target market?

tawdry dove
#

Didn't say I was?

burnt night
#

All the arguments made it seem that way. There's a lot of nice schemes for chargers at workplaces or homes.

tawdry dove
#

Hmm didn't intend that. I was just answering the questions

radiant jacinth
#

Convenience isn't a selling point for electric cars. They might very well require additional effort, like installing or finding convenient chargers etc

#

they have other pros

remote sail
#

Air Canada Flight 143 was a Canadian scheduled domestic passenger flight between Montreal and Edmonton that ran out of fuel on July 23, 1983, at an altitude of 41,000 feet (12,500 m), midway through the flight. The flight crew successfully glided the Boeing 767 to an emergency landing at a former Royal Canadian Air Force base in Gimli, Manitoba ...

METRIC SYSTEM CAUSING ERRORS

#

them's fighting words

scarlet moth
#

but like... you are not even half the way through your flight and your tank is nearing empty... don't you go 'huh? guess we have a problem'

#

The 767 was one of the first airliners to include an electronic flight instrument system, which operated on the electricity generated by the aircraft's jet engines. With both engines stopped, the system went dead and most of the screens went blank, leaving only a few basic battery-powered emergency flight instruments. While these provided sufficient information to land the aircraft, the backup instruments did not include a vertical speed indicator that could be used to determine how far the aircraft could glide.

what's it, 40 degrees in latitude?

#

30 for continental Canada, 42 for all of Canada

twin ridge
#

Last I checked about 4500 km from St John's to Victoria

#

Give or take 10%

#

There are 5 timezones, including Newfoundland I'd guess between 10 and 15 degrees per time zone, so yeah 40 makes sense

#

And that'll be longitude

rapid summit
#

wouldn't that be for longitude? ๐Ÿ™‚

twin ridge
#

Though the claim also works for latitude...

#

Southernmost point as around 42 or 43 degrees, near Niagara falls

There were proxy wars everywhere

I noticed some strange behavior with sshuttle and chisel while doing wreath. can someone explain it to me?
I used sshuttle onto the linux webserver and then set up a chisel server on the windows host for port forwarding. I tried connecting to it with a chisel client on port 16337 but it just wouldn't connect. then i tried port 16338 and it worked fine, nothing else was different.
What could it be? I might have been running socat on the first host, listening on port 16337, but the host was excluded from sshuttle

My first guess would be the port was closed in the firewall. There's also the #wreath-network channel just for that room

I remember looking into wire-tapping a while ago. That way it is supposed to be is that the NSA needs to get a warrant through probable cause, as required by the 4th Amendment. The potential issue is that those warrants are often issued by courts without the knowledge of the subject. If the FBI is hacking American citizens without a establishing probable cause in court, they are in clear violation of the Constitution.

@twin ridge you have the perfect recipe for poulet au vinaigre, right? ๐Ÿ™‚

twin ridge
#

Chicken and vinegar? Never tried it

#

I'd assume it needs a lot of sugar

scarlet moth

are there any french recipes that are spicy?

rapid summit

you can lower acidity of vinegar with other methods than sugar

azure trench
scarlet moth

I don't think that counts

azure trench

I know

scarlet moth

I require spice

azure trench

I guess French Guiana is technically part of France. They may have some spice foods.

rapid summit

The French use good ingredients, they don't have to hide their taste with spice ๐Ÿ˜‰

Well the Brits have some stuff that I really like. Good Fish&Chips is great, and afternoon tea is brilliant.

I'm a bit biased but I cook a ton of spanish food, I go through garlic & onions + salt/pepper/spices very quickly

rapid summit
#

Oh and the vinegar crisps!

scarlet moth
#

I don't even think Spanish food is really spicy is it?

#

maybe if they imported flavors/tastes from LatAm

#

or even Africa

north roost
#

depends, I dont use raw chilies much but I do used dried ones for pastes/rubs/salsas a lot

scarlet moth
#

and thats typical of Spanish food?

tawdry dove

Is Salsa Spanish or is that Latin?

I know southeast Asia has some very spicy food

ugh I just made elote yesterday with some imported cotija that was awesome

scarlet moth
#

I was thinking food specifically from Spain, although I have been to a Spanish restaurant before... they did serve some roasted chiles

#

but I don't remember the other food stuff being spicy

north roost
#

gotcha, i forget if paella is Spain's dish but I've had a ton of that and not a huge fan tbh

rapid summit
#

I guess paella is spicy.

scarlet moth
#

there's a good Spanish restaurant in the Boston area my friend took me to, and Jose Andres has a number of restaurants in the DC area, I went to one of his old ones that closed up, but it didn't yell Spain to me

tawdry dove
scarlet moth

paella is from Spain

anyway, husband and I are probably going to Spain next year

I'm thinking I should start taking breakfast food with me when I'm visiting USA ๐Ÿ˜„

why is that?

Because hotel breakfasts in decently priced hotels are pretty awful ๐Ÿ˜„

I guess like pancakes with bacon and eggs would be the quintessential "American" breakfast, but its such a regional thing, like if you're in the southwest you get huevos rancheros

odd acorn

Thank you :D

scarlet moth
#

ack

rapid summit
#

Whereas in the Nordics you get decent stuff pretty much everywhere, and good breakfasts in a lot of places.

scarlet moth
#

we were in one in Pompeii... it was hilariously bad but the hotel was so proud of it

#

Greece... we had the best hotel breakfasts

#

but in the US, skip the hotels

Oh I typically do. Because that's just a waste of time.

rapid summit

scarlet moth

oh we stayed at a B&B in San Francisco and the breakfast was amazing

but B&B's are a bit different

#

the hotel was also like $300/night

rapid summit

Now I'm hungry, and i already had dinner ๐Ÿ˜„

rapid summit
scarlet moth
#

maybe we should go back, it was great

#

yeah thats true, when I went, I stayed at one of the Marriotts for a conference... it was pretty pricey because it was right across the street from the conference center

rapid summit
#

But that wasn't even bad compared to the tiny tiny room I had in Boston a couple of years back, it was probably $2400 for four nights.

scarlet moth
#

this was away from city center

spark sun
#

Honestly, most hotel continental breakfasts are pretty terrible. If the hotel doesn't have a restaurant that serves cooked to order, skip it. Hyatts, IMO, have the most consistent restaurants, and the trendy Marriots have the worst

scarlet moth
#

union square kind of makes me sick though and a lot of hotels are there, I stayed in a haunted room or something near union square

#

this is where my husband and I went for our 10th anniversary... https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60713-d112358-Reviews-Parker_Guest_House-San_Francisco_California.html

It is LGBT friendly, right near a train line (whatever they call it) and incredibly cute victorian

rapid summit
#

Hah, reminds me of time I booked a hotel from "Union Square" with a thought that it's close to Powell Street station for easy access with luggage. It was almost on top of Nob hill

scarlet moth
#

ha

rapid summit
#

I haven't been there for years now. It's a nice city, although a bit far away in travel time. Although it's not a lot faster to get to Boston area, that's been a hub for some of the recent business meetings.

rapid summit
scarlet moth
rapid summit
#

Oh I see.

scarlet moth
#

I dunno if we'll stay there again or try the Presidio or something else

rapid summit

I'll probably just take something that is available. It's likely a business trip, it's not too fun travelling for 24h on vacation.

scarlet moth

I don't think I'll be going back to SF for work as I moved off the project that had conferences in San Francisco
