It's not really a checklist but my brief idea I try to put into words

First thing I do is definitely enumeration - so I start with a brief nmap scan to discover what it going on

Then, it all depends on what it gives me - but (if available) I try to go over FTP/SMB first with some anonymous login or things like this

After that, I either follow clues from what I've found or just progress to web pages
And there, I do some enumeration (do directory busting, checking page source, maybe subdomains if we get a domain), try to capture some packets and look for tokens or other cookies

If there's a more popular service running, I'd search for known exploits
And then I try all the inputs with adequate vulnerabilities (a.ka I wouldn't try to do IDOR in a login field )

If I get shell, that's great - I stablize it and look around for more low hanging fruits such as

• Hardcoded credentials inside websites (like in wordpress)
• Password reuse for users
• What current user can run as root (or with sudo overall)

Or in the end I just run a tool like linpeas that will find me something to work with

This is my way of doing things. Is it the best? Probably not. Does it work? Most of the time
