Self hosting a VPN means that no matter where you are, you're giving your ISP all your logs. Unless you're based in a country with a no log policy for their ISPs and strict privacy laws then that's a weird decision to make.

That's actually pretty easy: VPN / DNS (most VPNs also alter your DNS but you can either manually change or setup a DNS sinkhole pretty easily these days if you wanted). Cuts the ISP out from a lot of your info. You can run the VPN on your router so all devices use it too. *Using your own router instead of your ISP provided router, even without the VPN, is a good step towards having some control over your data / metadata.

It all depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Setting up a good VPN on a router will hide your traffic from your ISP. They still have some data to go off of - they probably know when you're streaming video vs when you're submitting text. But, they won't know you're on reddit. With your history they might be able to guess it (oh it's 3pm and they are browsing the web; well for the last 5 years they used a similar amount of data at 3pm and were always on reddit so...) but they can't know.

It also hides other internet traffic - cameras, smart lights, etc. anything that connects to your router.

But sure, it's easier to setup the vpn on a phone and if that's the only device you really use...or if you're only concerned about that device you could also do both: vpn on router + on phone (most vpns give you 5-10 active connections and the router only counts as 1).

If you want privacy you wont find it on a sever with 10k+ users thats the illusion, when you connect to a VPN at a network level you can see every other connected device and they can see you.

Most people dont realise that connecting to a shared VPN opens you up to ARP visibility, port scanning and removes security bypassing your routers firewall.

The only way to get true privacy is host your own VPN where you can trust the users that are connecting this either means self hosting or going with a company that offer dedicated VPN's
