I understand that in a smaller space, a collision is likely to happen earlier. But at the same time, a smaller space also has fewer reduction steps / fewer hashes overall than a larger space. So my intuition was that for a larger space, the first collision just happens later, but because many more reduction steps and hashes are generated overall, collisions should accumulate over time as well.

For example, if the entropy is 24 bits, then the space has about
2^24 possible values. If no collisions happened, the chains could in principle cover the whole space. And with 36 bits of entropy, there are
2^36 possible values, so there are also far more possible reduction outputs / hash values. So why doesn’t this scale out proportionally, such that the overall merge/collision behavior ends up being roughly the same? Why is a smaller space still considered more problematic for collisions and chain merges?
