Room: Metasploit: Meterpreter (Task 5 - Post-Exploitation Challenge)
Target: Win4Meterpreter
Issue: The standard exploit/windows/smb/psexec exploit with any Meterpreter payload (reverse_tcp, bind_tcp, x86, x64, staged, stageless) fails to create a session. The exploit authenticates,
uploads, and executes the payload successfully ("Service started successfully"), but the Meterpreter callback never connects back. This was reproduced across 5+ fresh target machines.
Root Cause Investigation:
- Confirmed Windows Defender was already disabled (service not running)
- Confirmed network routing works (target can ping attacker, and raw TCP connections from target to attacker succeed via PowerShell)
- The issue appears to be the Windows Firewall on the target blocking outbound/inbound connections on non-standard ports, combined with Meterpreter payloads being killed when executed as a
Windows service via psexec
Workaround used to complete the room:
- Used impacket-wmiexec to disable Windows Firewall: netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state off
- Generated a standalone payload with msfvenom
- Uploaded it to the target via smbclient over the ADMIN$ share
- Started a multi/handler listener in Metasploit
- Executed the payload on the target using impacket-wmiexec (instead of running it as a service)
- Only then did the Meterpreter session connect back
Expected behavior: The room instructs users to simply run exploit/windows/smb/psexec with credentials ballen/Password1 and a Meterpreter payload, which should produce a session immediately. The
target VM likely needs its firewall pre-disabled and/or the service execution method fixed during provisioning.

As a complete beginner. Firstly, I want to master the fundamentals:
- TCM Academy Helpdesk Course (Get the fundamentals down)
- Read the how a computer works: ron white book (ebook) to grasp the pinnicle details of a system
- take a look at networking: THM Presecurity, HTB Academy (Introduction to networking) then complete the comptia net+ material
- Learning Linux & windows fundamentals using tryhackme presec, then comp0leting HTB Academy (Windows & Linux Fundamentals)
- From there, learning programming: Python ( AutomateTheBoringStuff & Python Crash course ERIC Mathhes) to a comfortable standard and make my own scripts
- I will then complete the: Information Security Foundations pathway on HackTheBox academy
- After laying the foundations down, i will complete tryhackme cybersecurity 101 and then complete the whole pentester pathway
- I will then do hackthebox pentester pathway and actively compete in ctf challenges and hackerone
Also, this year im joining a college course "T Level - Digital Infrastructure" which is mostly academic with work experience off sits.
