if you want to get deeper with networking you can use something like GNS3 to play around on a deeper level. If you just want to do pentesting, a basic understanding is fine to get started. it's a different skillset, and there are different branches for red-teaming

yeah I had it set up where I could access via mobile from the VPS socket, then it was supposed to get forwarded to the plex server via wireguard with port redirection, but because of the host portion of the packets showing as the vps IP, it kept treating it as a remote device.

Haven't used tailscale tho I keep hearing about it, how exactly does that work?
