It depends on what you want to do. Malware, probably deep. Others, not so deep. Having a basic understanding of cryptography, how that works, OR, XOR etc. will help.

If you don't like low level programming, pointers, memory management, assembly, logic gates, then probably don't go the direction of malware analysis. If you DO like that stuff, then that could be a possible direction. But I agree, not a starting point.
