Still confused with certain subnets, /8 /16 /24 is easy because they're rounded to bits but if it's like /11 /17 how do they get converted to the 0-255 numbers for network and host allocation?

You split the network block in smaller blocks so /8 = 2x /9 = 4x /10 = 8x /11 and so on.

the only thing that changes is the subnet mast so instead of let's say for /8 which is 255.0.0.0 for /9 it would be 255.128.0.0 by changing 1 bit. 255.0.0.0 = 11111111.00000000.00000000.00000000 and the subnet for /9 would be 11111111.10000000.00000000.00000000

that's the subnet mask, it's the network address which is something around the lines of 192.168.0.0-128/25 and then you have 129.168.129-255/25 with both networks having the gateway of 255.255.255.128

It's very Crude, but it helps imagine the masks as bits

The mask dictates which bits (in this case shown as 0s) you are allowed to swap (1-0) to make your own IP in the network.

so the lowest number you can go is whatever the Static part is and the lowest IP in your DYnamic part (all 0s)

Basically your router (Or pc if I'm wrong) wraps the data segment with some data, one of which is representation of your PCs MAC

each of the bits that you borrow after the dot corresponds to a number and thats your magic number which is the size of your network
/26 = 1111 1111. 1111 1111. 1111 1111./0000 0000 (1 is the network portion and 0 is the host portion)
if you borrow one zero from the host it becomes /25 your magic number is 128 thats the size of your network
if you borrow two zero from the host it becomes /26 your magic number is 64 thats the size of your network and so on
and from their you find first and last IP , broadcast ip , next network etc
why 128 , 64 , 32 etc ? because thats how the binary is written
This is the magic number method but there are like 3 or 4 other ways to do subnetting

It doesn't literally put the MAC address. it puts some value that it internally knows is your MAC, but others will see it as a random value. Imagine like DNS, but they only broadcast the Name, never the address itself
