Hey guys, I have just started to use my own Kali Linux VM. I was doing the SimpleCTF challenge. There were some hiccups along the way, but theres a problem I am facing. Everytime I run the exploit script, the script gets some of the contents correct, but somewhere along the line it misses and then the whole output from the script is messed up. CVE-2019-9053. The username is supposed to be mitch, the email should have been valid.

So, from what I understand
Let's phrase it this way - physical memory is limited, program size not always. Also, juggling between different physical memory segments would be a pain, especially if they are not always continuous.

That's where paging comes in - we divide physical memory into smaller parts (pages, frequently roughly 4kb each) and when we run a program it prompts the OS to give it some memory

It's as if there was a storage place, and you needed to keep some stuff away from home. You go there and say
"Hey I need storage for this much stuff (data)".
The clerk (MMU) at the desk says:

"sure, your data is at nr. 8 (Addresses 0x[smth] to 0x[smth]+N) at our storage (RAM)"

But behind the scenes they put it in different places (so data gets put on pages) , so storage can fit as much as they can.
Clerk (MMU) then saves in their little notebook (page table) that

"Nr. 8 has their stuff stored at sectors 1.5, 2.0 and 3.3"

so when you try to access something from it e.g get the bike that you've left there (a.ka dereference the pointer to virtual memory) clerk checks his notebook and sees "okay, nr. 8 had their bike stored at this 2.0"

Kind of - Page tables are for what's needed at the moment. What's not needed stays in non-volatile like your SSD, but it's not some special part of your drive. It's just where it was saved before

Running a program starts more or less like this

• You run a program
• It gets loaded into memory - which means gets assigned a chunk of data. This chunk is Virtual Memory

Such memory, is not actually at the RAM next to each other, but can be scattered across different places - those places are pages
MMU takes care of everything and saves relationships between Virtual and physical memory.
ex. CPU asks OS to translate 0x2000

MMU checks the page table - Virtual 0x2000 is somewhere at Physical page nr. 7
Then gets physical address = Address of frame 7 * 4kb * offset

And reads the data

Page table makes MMU know which virtual memory is mapped to which physical page

I spent some time with the w1seguy room that was mentioned in here. Didn't get it on my own, but I was able to step through the Python code. I just couldn't take the last couple steps to solve it. I consulted a couple walkthroughs and talked through it witch ChatGPT. Wasn't clicking right away because I would disassociate whenever I saw some of the notation for XOR and stuff. I ended up doing several exercise working out XOR calculations by hand. I think I mostly internalized it now.

Yes you’re right but is just a tip to get ahead really, you won’t regret it, plus ones you have ypur VMware platform, you can add vulnerable VM and your kali on the same session different tabs, is really better, don’t get me wrong I do have VirtualBox from when I started, have 3 linux distros great for beginners but you definitely get ahead if you do get VMware and that setup that I recommend you’ll learn alot
