I'm new to the Discord and not sure where to ask this but I'm in a big mess because I'm trying to get started in cybersecurity on my Mac — it's the only tool I have available to do it (and preferably without dual-boot). To learn the basics I watched a few videos and I'm currently following a guide to get started on the Kioptrix Level 1 machine (a classic, I think, for noobs like me, but you have to start somewhere).
However, I'm on macOS and for x86 virtualization the only VM available is UTM. Here the horror begins: I currently have no way to access the IP of that machine using any scans I know (arp, netdiscover, Wireshark, etc.), because it's as if the virtual machine is hidden and I can't find out anything about it or even run a simple scan to discover the IP.
I'm open to any ideas — I've been struggling with this for five days with no success. (I've tried bridged and shared modes; I haven't tried VLAN because I don't see the point.) Any solution to communicate with the VM and obtain its IP — since I plan to scan the ports afterward — would be very welcome.

The issue is that UTM on macOS (especially on Apple Silicon) doesn’t support true bridged networking for x86 VMs.
This means your Kioptrix VM is often isolated — it gets its own virtual network that doesn’t talk directly to your host Mac network.

To fix this, we need to make the VM network visible to your Mac. The usual steps are:

Check which network mode your VM is using (Shared, Bridged, Host-only, etc.).

Make sure the guest OS (Kioptrix) has DHCP enabled.

Run ifconfig (in macOS Terminal) and see if UTM created a bridge or vnet interface.

Use sudo arp -a or Wireshark on your Mac to see if any new device pops up when the VM boots.

If none do, you’ll need to manually configure a host-only network or assign a static IP to both host and guest so they can talk.
