WannaCry exploited the EternalBlue vulnerability in the SMB service (MS17-010) by scanning public IP space (not just LANs).
EternalBlue provided remote code execution, which was used to deploy the DoublePulsar backdoor.
DoublePulsar then loaded the worm/ransomware payload.
Once infected, each host ran an autonomous scanner that probed both internal subnets and random external IPs on TCP/445, so every new victim immediately contributed to global propagation.
