i have a ubuntu vm in oracle cloud. i have my openvpn config for THM on the host and am connected successfully. but it doesn't say i'm connected on my access page and i can't nmap scan a server i started up in a room. i can see i have a 10.6. address in ifconfig, and i browsed to 10.10.10.10 and it says i'm connected.

Your routing looks fine—traffic to the TryHackMe subnets is going through the VPN as it should. Since routing isn’t the issue, check if Oracle Cloud’s firewall or network settings are blocking traffic. Also, make sure you’re scanning the right IPs and ports. i'm definitely scanning the right IP. it could be oracle blocking something, but i'm successfully connected to the THM vpn ... unless i need somehting else open on egress other than UDP 1194 for vpn

Oracle Cloud might be blocking some traffic besides UDP 1194. Check your VM’s outbound rules and make sure TCP/UDP to the TryHackMe IPs (10.10.x.x) is allowed. Also check any Network Security Groups that could block traffic. This can cause scans to fail even if VPN connects

Looks like we might be going over the same ideas. To help better, have you actually checked Oracle Cloud’s firewall or security group rules for outbound traffic? If so, can you share what’s allowed? Also, try running ping or traceroute to one of the TryHackMe lab IPs from your VM and share the output. That will help pinpoint where the connection is getting blocked

traceroute came back with the 10.6. gateway and then a ton of *'s

ping just hangs ... so does nmap

Since your ping and nmap hang, it means traffic isn’t getting past the VPN gateway. Oracle Cloud’s outbound firewall rules need to allow more than just UDP 1194. You should allow all outbound TCP and UDP traffic to the TryHackMe IP range (10.0.0.0/8) or at least to 10.10.x.x. Without this, scans and pings won’t work even if the VPN connection is established.

i don't think that would work - that's a private ip range. it wouldn't know how to route it. all 10./8 traffic should flow through the vpn, which would be UDP port 1194

You’re right that the 10.x.x.x traffic goes through the VPN (tun0) and UDP 1194 is for the VPN connection. But Oracle Cloud’s firewall can still block any outbound traffic before it reaches the VPN. So, you need to allow all outbound traffic in the egress rules to make sure everything, including VPN and lab data, can pass through properly.
