When I was growing up, I immediately got into the Gmail beta (prior to that I had Yahoo lol) and thought webmail and eventually proprietary apps were all I needed for life. Finally working professionally with email I did see how useful Outlook was there.

Now I'm a diehard Thunderbird user personally and love it to death.

I'll just say if you have never tried one out, do so, especially with Thunderbird. The difference it will make to even your personal email productivity is astounding

I've moved everything over to Proton Mail and while they are not perfect as a company, this is a much better solution for me

You can use Thunderbird with Gmail, but fair it's not quite as seamless since they don't respect open email standards for Folders entirely (instead Gmail relies on propritary tags internally which Thunderbird has to half impliment as folders)
