Yo, the SOC gig is mostly just triaging 24/7, so you don’t get to dive deep, especially at level 1. There are other roles like DFIR where you need to be solid with coding, plus have serious skills in OSINT, reverse engineering, and payload knowledge

I took the SAL1 cert exam the other day and have some feedback. I have been studying this stuff for over a year. Off and on mostly - except for the last 90 days when I buckled down. I completed the entire cyber security roadmap (pre-sec, cyber 101, SOC level 1, several random rooms and challenges, and the SOC sim several times). I also watched YouTube videos and did some external study.

I failed the exam miserably.

I’m starting to think I’m just not smart enough for this career. It’s just not clicking. I have learned a lot but it just seems like I’m no where near where I need to be for an entry level position. It’s super frustrating and discouraging.

Anyone have any advice for someone who is thinking about just going a different route now?
