I heavily prefer normal Arch over Debian for that reason.

If you want the Arch experience, I recommend EndeavourOS.
Both kinda remove the painful parts of dealing with baseDebian/Arch.

Fedora is also a very valid choice for a daily driver, but I have not used it.

Or is that malware still lurking in the OS even after a complete update

If you think you got hit with something more invasive, reinstall the OS.

If you are worried that the device firmware got compromised, the best bet is to replace hardware.

Your best bet would be to create a forensic image of the device. This usually requires root permissions to the device. You would then need to perform data carving in order to attempt to recover files from different sectors of the device, assuming the reference to them hasn't been corrupted. This would be best achieved using an established tool instead of attempting to perform this manually yourself without proper knowledge of the device image layout.
