Is the attackbox vs virtual machine in the browser slow for you? I use the openvpn option and use my own machine (virtual machine actually) to do the rooms/challenge. I prefer it that way and I think it has a very good performance.

There's ways to relate your experience. While I'm just now shifting fully into cybersecurity and getting more hands on, I got into IT with a background in sociology. And for CS specifically, I can take my analysis experience and apply it as relevant experience. The biggest thing from a gov perspective is some kind of experience and an approved certification.

technically you dont need them, unless you're going into government work (they have a list of approved baseline certifications) but they are also a way to show your experience. There's trainings you can get which will give you little badges of completion (such as Cisco's Cybersecurity Analyst Career Path) but they don't hold as much weight (i'd argue a bit of gatekeeping, but im cynical by nature lol). But if you're a hobbyist like I was, free trainings (or paid) are great ways to fill in knowledge gaps.

You should always supplement your learning with other resources. Especially as TryHackMe might not go into the same depth on all topics.

Furthermore, it depends on what you define as an "expert". Cybersecurity is a massive field and I would say that you are an expert even if you only work in one area. However, you probably won't become an expert if you aren't actively working and studying in that area daily.

Hopefully one day it will be a repository full of information to cover all areas 😊

Uhh, well, for websites you probably will learn what you need to know on TryHackMe.

A lot of your knowledge will come from learning programming itself as you will learn secure coding practices, and when you setup your website if you're hosting it on a platform it will likely tell you the security features during your onboarding.

Most of your learning, just as in anything, will be hands-on experience and solving problems when they occur. If you do TryHackMe courses and pentest our labs, you will learn what to look out for but majority of it might not be applicable to your setup which is perfectly fine.

I don't know a lot of website devs who have completed security courses outside of the ones within the courses they use for their websites.
I'm not really knowledgeable in the area however as I'm not a website developer so take this with a pinch of salt

Someone else in a different room said it best, me thinks. To paraphrase, understanding how things work will enable you to be an effective Red Teamer. In the case of "Red teaming" vs "Blue teaming", you have to have an understanding of how things work on both ends in order to be able to do your job well.

You will learn both areas regardless of which field you choose, it's just the depth that you will go into that area won't be as much.
Best method is to learn both; whether you do that at the same time, or you learn one field first and then learn the other field.

I.e. I learn how to attack a website, and then I learn how to defend a website.
Or, I learn how to do a particular technique (such as LFI) and then I learn how to stop LFI.

Purple is the best of both worlds because not only do you know how to attack something but you also know how to think like a defender which means you have better evasion.

I would say the SAL1 exam was extremely fun. Most of the information covered was definitely covered by CYSA as well but there was a large portion that dug into specifics on the THM training rooms.

The simulation felt very comfortable as it combined both knowledge and instinct based on that knowledge. I enjoyed it.
