It's a lot about being able to prove that you are you and that the person you are sharing files with or talking to is who they claim to be, so they use different "proofs" by verifying different social media such as GitHub or your own website etc. and your generated gpg/pgp keys.

But I still don't plan on putting all my eggs in one basket, I never trust any service 100%, but it's definitely a good thing for many things.

I understand what you mean, I thought the same thing, but that's kind of what the point is, verifying that you have control over so much is yet another proof that you are you. But you don't have to use these proofs either. This is not about being anonymous in any way, but the opposite. But encryption etc. is awesome. Then you can share files very privately or even a git that is completely secure between you and your team. I don't have everything figured out yet, but it's definitely a good thing I will use in the future.
