Originally the user base were hacking students and professionals -- people with a technical background who just wanted to knuckle down and learn. When it started getting bigger we began to get people joining who wanted to get into hacking because they found it cool and wanted to get into the hype.
The site itself started catering towards them, which became a bit of a slippery slope towards "you don't need any technical background at all to get into hacking", which... isn't realistic. That's a vicious circle though when it comes to an associated community.

I went into $70k debt to get my Bachelors in Comp Sci. That debt allowed me to gain entry to industry at a much higher base pay, and very nearly doubled in the first 5 years of working. If you don't know how to make a Test Lab Environment, you shouldn't be "playing" with Kali.

Even if you get stuck on a ctf - this means you’ve found a point where your knowledge is limited. So take that to study the subject and revisit the ctf when you have the requisite knowledge to complete it. But you won’t really know before trying
