i have a weird pass time of going on my suggested friends, looking at their profile and trying to find where a picture was taken and do literally nothing with that information. most of them are local and ik where they live just cuz its a small town, its honestly just fun to see how easy people make it to find them

when I was doing a security engineer role I met some really talented people use Powershell to roll out changes on Windows systems, came in extremely useful

karmic drum
#

I think with Windows where it confusing is, when do you use Get or Set, and to chance the location is also weird. Do you include the C: with the path or not, as I tried everything but it doesnt accept any instruction

#

Here is an example. I tried all different ways, no one wanted to do anything

That was also a question I wanted to ask. Is there anythimg you guys will recommend I should learn before jumping into Cyber Security, especially regarding SOC. For instance have a basic understanding of a certain language or anything? The jump from Pre-Security to Cyber101 is quite big, feels like I missed something.

rapid merlin
#

any language learned is usually helpful as the more you learn, the more they connect the dots in a way

#

yet all require investment in learning and practice from my experience

#

that can be fun too 🙂

is this new levels?

Yes

finite basalt
#

I've got some work to do then later haha

brittle bramble
#

Question for all, is being a pentester a good option, from everything i see in the hacking community it seems like such a saturated title, so I simply am unaware if jobs are actually often available to them?

finite basalt
#

depends

visual elm
#

Yeah it used to only go up to 0xD now there are eight new ones up to 0x15

finite basalt
#

Some say it's overrated but you best do research

brittle bramble
finite basalt
#

regarding job saturation, you'll rarely start out as a pentester

#

I wouldn't worry about it too much from the get go, most people seem to move laterally towards their ideal job role after gaining experience

brittle bramble
#

interesting ( sorry if its a dumb question, i only started learning cyber sec stuff a few weeks back

finite basalt
#

nah it's all good

#

for example I do software dev at the moment and when I finish uni I'm looking at either a SOC role, devops role or software dev

brittle bramble
brittle bramble
finite basalt
#

but my end goal is actually either pentesting or malware developement and analysis

finite basalt
#

it's the idea that once you have that experience in a related field you can transfer skills

brittle bramble
#

right

finite basalt
#

there's plenty of people who've shifted from completely different non-technical jobs to cyber security so there's many paths you can take towards it as long as you're willing to learn and adapt

#

Like you've got degrees out there, certifications, apprenticeships etc.

brittle bramble
#

hopefully)

finite basalt
#

it's absolutely do-able if you're passionate 😄

brittle bramble
finite basalt
#

bug bounties can be a good way of practicing once you're getting the hang of things, they provide experience and can get you a bit of cash (although I wouldn't expect it, especially at the start)

brittle bramble
#

ill def look into that eventually!

finite basalt
#

That's great to hear 😄 it goes without saying, where there's a will there's a way

brittle bramble
#

I completely agree, its just overwhelming to me at the moment, being such a huge field of work

finite basalt
#

It's constantly changing so you'll always be learning but as long as you're interested in it you'll be fine

#

never expect to learn everything

brittle bramble
#

fair points

finite basalt
#

it's good to have a good fundamental understanding of things but with it always changing, it's impossible to be an expert in every area, you may find you have a knack for attacking web-apps or reverse engineering or network security

There's loads of different specialisations within and it's good to have some understanding of them all but once you find what you're good at you can focus on that and continue to learn about other areas as well. Also worth noting that you'll learn a lot from peers within work, here and at conferences so don't worry too much at the moment, enjoy your learning and make sure to get into a habit of writing notes so you can come back to them 😄

brittle bramble
#

right, well I appreciate the advice

#

also funny side note

#

im glad ive finally stumbled across a community that is note saturated

#

i love it

#

ive always been

finite basalt
#

I definitely agree, I haven't many notes from here but I'm going to be working on that, I do like written notes which is partly why

rapid merlin
finite basalt
#

I remember my last job interview I brought my laptop (in case we spoke about past projects from my github) a pen and paper and copies of my CV

finite basalt
#

and the pen and paper actually was really handy, we had a team building like exercise where it was the SAS scenario question about "you're on a plane and it crashes in a canadian forrest in winter, the nearest town is 10 miles away, you can take x amount of items from the plane, here's what's available, what do you take and why?"

brittle bramble
#

interesting

finite basalt
#

I ended up actually pulling out the pen and paper, ranked the items and why and then we got put with the other interviewee's and had to agree on a new list together

#

so again we discussed it, I wrote our answers down and notes as to why and I think they were rather impressed about the forethought I'd put into what I bring to interviews haha

brittle bramble
#

right because not everyone comes prepared, and that shows a propper judgment from your side

finite basalt
#

It's something I intend to do with every future interview and definitely recommend, Laptop in case they want to hear about past projects in case they have anyone techy part of the interview who can look at it, paper and pen for notes and drawings and then CV copies in case you or the interviewer want to refer back to it and don't have a copy

#

We also had to do a mind dump type thing where they gave us various pictures and we wrote down anything that came to mind, we then had to explain the thought process as part of the interview which was really fun actually because one of them was a car and I'd happened to see something about drilling into the bumper of a car to get access to the CAN bus which is a communication network for a car used by the engine, security systems etc. in a car

#

The interviewers were also not just like HR, it was my current manager who actually has a decent technical understanding of things but also the team themself and the team got a say in who was hired, we actually as interns also had the opportunity the next year to say what we thought about candidates based on our interactions and observations which I thought was really nice

brittle bramble
#

sorry for slow replies im exhausted falling in and out of sleep lol

#

but that sounds really nice

chilly veldt
rapid merlin
#

I brought a laptop to an interview in gamedev, showed them some of my projects, and a dev was like "what's that?" it was my DAW for making soundtracks, they seemed fascinated by it. I didn't land the programming job, yet got asked to make soundtracks/audio 😄

#

that never would have happened had I not brought the laptop

arctic cradle
#

rapid merlin

So the module I just completed for university, the task was to reimplement most of it to remove the restrictions present in it, you could do it using the interfaces or do what a few of us did where we reimplemented it from scratch.

Turns out the source code for the DLL was written in c# and the entire thing can be disassembled lmao, was a realisation a few of us had afterwards after hearing from the module leader that some people just worked their way around the restrictions 🤣

#

Having taken a look, I've done it a completely different way to them and as it is within my nature to be stubborn, I did it better 🤣

karmic drum
#

@rapid merlin I am now at Scripting and Components for Linux Shells. I see its straight foward coding, which I have no knowledge of. Would you recommend I do that Phyton Fundamentals before continuing?

finite basalt
#

if it's scripting within linux shells I'd recommend looking at the bash related rooms

#

if it's just general scripting then yeah python would be a good start

rapid merlin
#

rooms often mention any prerequisite, like @finite basalt mentioned, shell scripting (bash) knowledge can be useful there

finite basalt
#

I forgot about prerequisites, I will say I've not been on tryhackme in a while cause I've been distracted haha

Fun fact: If you use # (Content) to set up a heading inside of a note page, it'll let you compress it by clicking on the heading. Interestingly this can also be used to compress headings of higher denominations into the lowest ones, so if you use ## (Content) you can actually nest content inside of the larger heading note.

This can also be accomplished by having a subject line and then using tab on content underneath it to create a listing that can be compressed into the subject line.
