I mean, you saw my wish list, it's all pretty lightweight, thus my old Dell Lattitude w/ 16GB of RAM will be node 0 πŸ˜„

#

Do you guys think people will hate whoever makes the breakthrough to general intelligence

sinful moon
#

anyways VMware has scored me about 5 times too many, from now on I'm a Proxmox evangelist, and already was a qemu/kvm enjoyer. Stick to open source kids, it'll treat you well

sinful moon
#

always depends on your needs, although yeah that can grow in time which is why a cluster is great

split compass
#

Some folks at work were looking at XCP-NG, but it looks like it may not have support for as many virtualization/pass-through features.

meanwhile us back on vSphere with Media encoding...

#

no reason not to go with a qemu/kvm based solution

#

I've plenty of experience with it via virt-manager, UTM on macOS and iOS and just bare qemu emulation I've done, it's super solid

#

This is more the future than Xen or VMware

Alright tapping out to play Halo MCC with a friend, great chatting with you all as always! Thanks for keeping me company c:

found a flaw in a fast food survey code, tried to exploit post with a pitchfork attack but session id's are stopping it from going through. Do you guys think a Autohotkey bot is enough to submit as a bug bounty ?

sinful moon
#

Before you even continue, please check if you are even allowed to be doing such a thing such as on HackerOne

whole yew
#

Strongly recommend you figure out if this kind of testing is allowed on the survey site, as it could open you up to liability if it's expressly disallowed in the ToS/EULA and you continue

split compass
#

Gods, Wings are a messy late-night snack.

#

LOL, currently?
Not sure; but yes there are certainly less IT connected people who come to chat.

elder dew
#

Honestly, my question is more for people who aare already in IT positions I guess.

#

I'm 39 and have a shit ton of hospitality industry/restaurant management work experience. I tried to shift into networking a few years ago and did...I worked with someone in Florida who was a friend of a friend.

elder dew
#

Now I'm not living in Florida anymore.

#

If I'm applying to an IT firm, what is going to be looked at the most?

#

certs? the few years I did field tech low volatage work?

#

Doing computer repairs for a little extra cash when the local shop needs help?

#

I've had 2 local firms say "OK...You got the right guy. Send me your resume and show me your skills". I don't know if I'm stupid or what, but my skills are configuring networks and doing field tech stuff as well as hardware/software repairs.

boreal scarab
whole yew
#

100% depends on the role.

#

There's no clear and definite answer with a question that vague

elder dew
#

Thanks. I have one guy who actually taught me in grade school for a year that is getting back in town on the 18th. I want to have whatever skills I need to show this guy together before he's back.

elder dew
whole yew
#

Ok. If you can't describe the role you want, I have no idea how to approach what you have. If you can link what you know to tasking on the job req, that's a great first step

craggy dove
#

Any thoughts on new 50s NVIDIA series?

whole yew
#

Certs are Ok. Might be a requirement depending on the org and the role, but certs are first and foremost a business need, not an individiual contributor thing.

elder dew
#

And I realize my question is really vague too. I guess I'm just wondering if anyone in here works at a place that offers everything from basic PC repairs to cloud hosting/network security and field technicians as well. If so, what might be a good thing to focus on?

#

I don't know if the 'jack of all trades master of none' approach is good or not.

craggy dove

cloud quiver
elder dew
#

That's the website of the business I would ideally like to work at. There is no specific job opening though.

whole yew
#

It's almost always better to go deeper than to go broader, with your skillset. Once you have a good depth of knowledge, ie 3-5 years experience, you'll have seen enough that it's easy to translate what you know into other domains. If you go broad too early in your career, you won't have the background necessary for many mid and senior level roles

elder dew
split compass
elder dew
#

And thanks for not outright calling me lazy or dumb. I have just applied to about 20 places around here and this is one of the last places I can think of that I would like to work at...or that is even computer related.

split compass
#

@elder dew everyone's journey in IT looks a little different, but what has served me well is the hacker mentality, the belief that "It's not my job." is a cop-out better viewed as "I'd like to take that learning opportunity."

elder dew
split compass
#

And, it's a kind of hard market right now; so being willing to pick up anything from LV cable, to Security Cam installs, to tier1 phone support is good.

I've done pretty much everything, Telephony, VoIP, cabling, user support, network management, infra management.

elder dew
#

I have built some websites and written some scripts...Have preferred linux over windows for years now. I went back to college to go for a masters in cybersec...went for the first year and then COVID lockdowns happened. I was in New Orleans and UNO was only doing online classes, couldn't even continue if I wanted to due to living situation..

#

Also, I remember one of the rooms, might have been part of an old AoC? Did a bit on smart contracts.

#

I found that interesting.

elder dew
#

There are actually some other interesting options aside from IPFS...Putting data on some blockchains is possible for such a small amount of $$. I like messing with inscribing HTML/TXT files with other stuff that is on-chain. You can build an entire website on chain that points to other data like images and stuff using html/js...extremely interesting.

split compass
#

Yep, that's essentially the concept of Web3.
Web3 doens't have to be chain, but is heavily leveraged.

elder dew
#

Yea. I'm not looking to debate the best blockchain, but there is a big block version of Bitcoin that allows smart contracts to be made for close to nothing cost-wise. Storing data on this chain is extremely cheap as well. I love all that kinda stuff and have practiced it a bit.

brittle drum

Exactly! FOSS devs are out there trying to squash bugs between day jobs, side hustles, and probably binge-watching their favorite shows. Unless they’ve got a benefactor or some magical bounty rolling in, it’s more code when you can than ```code on demand

split compass

When I was much younger I went through like 5 or 6 interviews with Staples.
Basically, one manager wanted me because they knew I would whip their service dept into ship shape. The other didn't because I was unlikely to be a sales asset.
And they were clearly back and forth over whether or not to bring me in.

For me it's an ethical stance.
I won't sell a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
But I will absolutely sell the shit out of something that provides a functional benefit.

If you want to learn and hack ethnically and legally. You are in the right place. Use the resources this website provides you to learn and within it you will find simulations. You can play in those simulations legally. This isn’t some discord however where you are spoon fed now to back or taught how to hack outside the law. Go through the resources provided in the community and use them in conjunction with the website that this discord community participates in (try hack me) so you can learn safely.

I am personally learning Rust, because I want to develop my own apps (Tau'ri is superior to Electronh) && do smart contract security (Solana, Substrate).
So I would know its an overkill and the bottleneck is the network response time, so you won't get better speed from Rust.

Burp is straight forward you just have to learn the interface and its options as well as configurations. You should have pre requisite knowledge in web applications and networking in my opinion to make the fullest use of it.

Of course anytime. I like to think of it like this.

How easy is it to use a scalpel during surgery?

The answer is easy. How to use that scalpel effectively though requires other skills be learned first. Else you are just cutting without purpose. Cutting without purpose leads to a dull blade and in this instance, likely other issues lol.

In EU (or at the very least Czechia), you can get up to 90% of the in person course refunded. There can be a certification like CEH in price, so you would basically pay the cost of certification and got training paid for by the state. There is a limit how much they refund you and these state-subsidized courses are overprices, since the state is paying it anyway. Nevertheless, you can almost get it for free like the cert.

Getting a job solely from certificates would be hard. I'd recommended working on projects that interest you, seeing what jobs are looking for, and getting an entry level IT job

errant fossil
polar holly
#

Remember with the THM certs you're only exposed to the industry, it's not exactly a cert to get you into an interview, however I heard about a success story from somebody who I introduced THM to. They worked in the bank and with the THM cert the bank got them working in their SOC center as a SOC level 1 and they worked themselves up to SOC level 2 within the bank, but that is an exception and not the hard rule on this.

rapid merlin
# sick lance With a really strong network

To be honest, we expected this result. But getting certified from a solid institution like HTB isn't necessary. The program's teaching style is great, and the price is pretty reasonable. Overall, it seems like a good investment.

stoic quarry
rapid merlin

I’m giving the kitten strokes everywhere so when he’s older he doesn’t bite with tummy rubs

polar holly

Kinda, but not really. The bank they're working for is always hiring within their IT department and they're always looking to get their employees into the departments that makes most sense for the employees. So HR saw he posted the cert he got and invited him for an interview. Obviously if he failed the interview they'd not have taken him, but yeah network is key.
