yeah they're just application based URLs essentially
so an app can register a url protocol prefix and when the system encounters it, it'll use the assigned software to perform an activity using that url and data

you could also have malware that registers a moniker protocol so it can execute commands etc.

it can do way more than download files

you can have them run executables, download files etc.

In fact if you want an example, dell uses it to send data to its driver software to tell it to check for updates or install an update

theres a lot of scam bots and every server just bans them, maybe there could be something like the scammers and the message get moved to a private channel and idk a dummy account goes through all of them and reports all their accounts

not talking about this server specifically, just a thought
