Hello , soo i got a question now a friend of mine at work got hacked she probably visited some sus link and it downloaded her chrome passwords etc .. i already disinfected her laptop and to be completely sure i even reinstalled a windows for her , the hacker still sends her emails of her passwords ( old ones ) and wants to exort her for money , i don't know if he currently have access but from my knowledge am pretty sure he doesn't unless malware works in a diffrente way than i think anyy one have any idea what do i do in this situation or if anyone could guide me or help me here? :

change passwords, if you have wiped the windows clean and reinstalled, you are safe.

Just make sure she changed her old passwords. The email scam where they send old passwords is common and is usually harmless as it’s just a trick.

considering you made a fresh install of Windows, she should be fine, just set her up with a decent firewall, as for the extortion, that's pure blackmailing, she should change all the important passwords using a password manager ASAP and that extortion would become irrelevant at all

Malware that extorts admin privileges can stay in a system after a reset which is one like bios malware but they’re not common

And no it's not a boring profession Sam, it could be exhilirating. The jobs vary a lot. On the one hand you can become an analyst on the other you can become a pentester. (Not testing pens, but penetrating software) So it's really a decent profession to go into, but for some of us, we just enjoy cyber as a hobby.

Exactly what Uncle Esqy said. The field is too massive to tell you to focus on one thing. Some guys enjoy working cryptography and only work that, others work in general pentesting. It's about what you find enjoyable. For me, I enjoy cybersecurity as a hobby. Playing CTF's and not working in the field. I'd rather work in a forest away from computers, but you might enjoy other things. Best advice anyone ever gave me is, find your own voice in the crowd of information. YOLO.

Issue that I have with movies and series is they never truly portray the reality of cyber security. Imagine if people made a movie of Advent of Cyber and what we're doing to complete challenges. Or any of THM's rooms. Certain nobody looks as deranged and nowhere close do we shout, hacking x now. We just launch commands and write scripts and see what changed and if we can get in. Even if they used actual burp suite in the movies it would be 100% better than watching the cringe they portray.

Would a software engineering bachelors be ok to get a start in Cybersecurity?

I enrolled into this bachelors and want to make sure it’s what’s gonna work for me

then use that to get a job in software eng, then use the money from that job on certs etc
