What is a reason for a DLL...

granite narwhal
#

To start program we should have DLL files to start

dusky forge
#

Hi!

granite narwhal
#

I'm not expert

pallid lotus
#

I mean, you're technically right. A program linked against a missing DLL will not run.
That is not the reason they exist though, nor is it the reason we use them.

pallid lotus
#

It's also how you make pre-existing code available to a new program -- similar to how you can just install a Python / JS library, but more complicated and much, much older.

pallid lotus
# granite narwhal That what I mean

Being technically correct doesn't answer the question.
I could have responded by saying that the sky is blue. I would be right, but that doesn't mean it's relevant kekw

granite narwhal
#

Not nesscary to learn it

pallid lotus
#

Eh? What isn't

granite narwhal
#

The DLL

pallid lotus
#

Is not necessary to learn... What?

sand trench
#

DLL == dynamic link library

pallid lotus
#

Yes, well done Shadow kekw

granite narwhal
#

I know

sand trench
#

there you go.. a technically correct answer that helps nothing

pallid lotus
# granite narwhal The DLL

I mean, it's kinda necessary to know how DLLs work for a huge number of reasons.

Any development (or exploit development) in C/C++ will use them (or SOs on Linux -- same principle).

Attacks like DLL hijacking (obviously) require knowing how DLLs work. Library preloading on Linux as well.

split compass
granite narwhal
#

I dont need exploit dev

split compass
#

That said, if you're looking for where to learn more about computer fundamentals.

Dave's Garage, Ben Eater, and Low Level Learning are great, each for different reasons.

pallid lotus
#

As a general rule, anytime you say that something isn't necessary to learn, 99 times out of 100 you're going to be spouting absolute crap.

Everything is worth learning in this industry. The aim of the game is to prioritise the order in which you learn things -- not to just decide that some things aren't worth it.

#

That isn't hacking

split compass
#

Being called to the other lab to save the day. BIAB.

granite narwhal
#

But step by step I'm learning so I'm facing about

split compass
#

I still need to go back to Dave's Garage a few times and watch him write programs from scratch without use of a linker, to understand better what the linker does ๐Ÿ˜„

pallid lotus

The curiosity mindset is the most important thing for anyone in cyber security. If you don't have that then this ain't a good industry to be in.

split compass

The tl;dr on those two is. If you get stuck, that's fine, that's even normal. Try to be clear about where you got stuck, not what you got stuck doing. It will be easier for us to help if we understand the problem, as opposed to the failed solution.

# eager marsh Are these written by people with zero social skills? This reeks of โ€œErm achtuall...

No, they're written by busy people who don't like having their time wasted.

Those guides are to help people adapt to the internet age (i.e., drop mannerisms which are only effective for face-to-face communication). They increase efficiency and stop you from making social faux pas in the modern world.

If you think they're wrong and don't want to follow the guides because you think the authors are antisocial, that's your problem, but you'll be pissing people off by neglecting them ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
