Well actually, if we're talking about "making the horse drink", then you could technically speaking stimulate the part of its brain responsible for thirst and drinking behavior. This would likely mean targeting the hypothalamus, the region that regulates thirst. Using targeted electrical stimulation you could activate the thirst pathways in the hypothalamus to artificially induce the sensation of thirst. This could make the horse feel compelled to drink water. "Making it drink water" because the horse itself won't resist their own temptations, as it is a horse

# rapid merlin so i have a windows 11 pro vm but my local windows is 11 home. and i think that ...

if two interfaces in the same network share the same IP address, then Windows will throw a fit, so this can't be the case

furthermore, you can't use a public IP address within a private network (as defined by RFC 1918); check your IP configurations for both your host computer and your VM, and make sure that they are in the same subnet

lastly, both interfaces must be in the same virtual network; if you are using VirtualBox, you can attach the VM's adapter to "Host-only Adapter," which will create a virtual adapter for your host computer and connect it to the same virtual network as your VM

If you have lived in UK you would be familiar with the Mcdonalds Monopoly ticket contest. Where you needed to get 3 tickets to win a prize just like the one on THM. Thing is the final 3rd tickets are only made in very few numbers. So even if you have 2 tickets for a prize you are not really "so close" to getting the third ticket. That's not how it works. To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Arch Linux. The performance improvemnts are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of the GNU + Linux kernal, most of the it will go over a typical wiki user's head. There's also journalctl 's objective outlook, which is deftly woven into systemd - its personal philosophy draws heavily from Linus Torvalds, for instance. The powerusers understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of the user space, to realize that they're not just useful- they say something deep about Arch.

$480 for online pre-registration before the convention starts

primal kestrel

wsl1 is so cursed it gave my coworker bluescreens for weeks until he narrowed it down

#

but ya a vm is Much Preffered for Kali

#

though as a dev environment wsl2 + vscode is kind of a dream when working on windows

sinful moon
#

Yeah and fair maybe some of those horrors are why that impression was left on me. I just never hard much of a reason to test WSL2 that hard when I have perfectly good Linux based pentesting systems elsewhere. Always thought it was a bit of a half measure in terms of infosec tooling anyways

#

yeah as mentioned, no issue for dev or quick *nix tasks tho

#

but fair even for personal use I have a remote VPS box I just use for my pentesting and etc, aka babby’s first c2 server lol

#

so a lot of WSL or whatever is, lets ssh into my real Linux machine lol

primal kestrel

my worst issue with WSL was picking a linux flavor that ran on the oldest glibc runtime possible. needed to develop for QNAP NAS and somehow none of the runtimes available for it ran on WSL, which turned into a cross compiling nightmare

10/10 yes

#

I mean even if you’re only using it for Plex/Jellyfin or whatever

#

it’s literally current iPhone specs in them, by far the most powerful streaming device and can actually game if you wanted it to

#

I’m convinced they sell them at a loss

primal kestrel
#

ik LG doesn't have a criterion app which is a big minus for me but apple tv does

sinful moon
#

also yeah as much as I love webOS as a platform/idea, the C3 just doesn’t have enough hardware to really do it justice

#

plus yeah I’d also like to have my TV not connected to my network in favor of a more purpose built and more secure device

primal kestrel
#

i hadn't thought about that

sinful moon
#

yeah it was pretty low on the scale of threat modeling, but there was a big LG TV vunerability not long ago as well

i've been looking into something like this but i don't have a lot of room in my apartment since i live in a studio atm

I think I've got 2tb internal nvme and 1tb of external nvme and then up to 4tb hdd

Also fitted it a firmware hacked Blu-ray drive for reasons I’m sure you’ll understand lol. The dual Xeons make short work of video encoding

primal kestrel

sinful moon

The NAS holds the movies however, and this hosts the server and encoding side of things

primal kestrel

dual xeons is so good that must have been fun to set up and get working

that is genuinely a very cool setup

finite basalt
#

Rate it, we do similar ish for CDs and music

sinful moon

Very much so, yeah it’s just running VMware vSphere, but fair that was before Broadcomm crapped the bed dramatically

I just have a ton of experience administrating this exact kind of setup at work

finite basalt

we're using esxi and vsphere too over here

sinful moon

finite basalt

Although most server interaction is actually on nethserver within that

I have a very lovehate relationship with nethserver

sinful moon
#

Interesting, first I’ve heard of that distro

#

Makes sense though

finite basalt
#

It's centos based but can be installed on top of any distro technically

#

Makes setting up various services much easier when it works correctly

primal kestrel
#

this sort of thing is outside of my expertise but do you mind if i add you to talk about it at some point? probably won't look into it for a few months because i need time to financially recover from the ps5 pro but it's something i'd like to get setup with

sinful moon
#

Sure, that would be no problem!

#

Sounds like we have plenty of interests in common

finite basalt
#

Over here I want to get my desktop setup and a proper managed firewall and then potentially setup a homelab vlan, just want to upgrade the ram in the computer and then get some network cards

sinful moon
#

This is a 2014-2016 era server I will say, but even then its largely overkill beyond the video encoding lol

primal kestrel
#

i have such a negative centos experience but only because i've had to use a distro from 2016 for compiling

finite basalt
#

Well this will be a Ryzen 5 3600 build, currently 16gb of ram but that'll be changed

sinful moon
#

Often this server is pretty idle but when it’s going, whew it’s really going

finite basalt
#

When I went to uni I let him use it under the terms of: he cleaned it and I got it back when he got his own haha so looking forward to it. I am going to daily drive my laptop though I think because it will perform slightly better

#

I do have a vita but it's been in pieces for months because I'm meaning to change the joystick at some point 😅

sinful moon
#

Back in the day I played more emulated games on them than actual PSP games, but these days I appreciate the PSP’s own library tons. And not to say I didn’t enjoy some back in the day

finite basalt
#

I played the umds because I had a habit of breaking psps

sinful moon
#

was freaking mindblowing in 2006 or whatever when you could emulate GBA, the compeditor’s last gen system, on this current handheld

finite basalt
#

I wasn't trusted to touch electronics because of my history with psps

sinful moon
#

lol, to be fair UMD mechanisms were fragile

finite basalt
#

I bricked 2 PSPs and so have owned 4 psps in maybe 10-15 years

finite basalt
primal kestrel
#

my parents would never buy me a psp so i always ended up watching my friend play

sinful moon
#

Oh I bricked my first PSP in the Firmeware 1.5 era, and had to use Pandora’s battery via another friend’s PSP to fix it

finite basalt
#

I followed one tutorial on my 3000 with temporary custom firmware, final step is a reboot and then at the very end of the tutorial it says "don't do this with temporary custom firmware, it'll brick it"

sinful moon
#

it was because I tried an early homescreen theme changer app which modified flash0:/ so that’s understandable

primal kestrel
#

i swear having to deal with stuff like that is what sends you directly into IT career

finite basalt
#

Or when I cancelled an update and it didn't cancel so little me pulled the battery

sinful moon
#

Yeah hand me down PCs are what got me into tech lol

#

I had to fix them up and make them work for myself

finite basalt
#

Cfw

#

I mentioned ark earlier but it has a completely rewritten IPL and can actually boot a magic memory stick without a pandora now on some models

sinful moon
#

Still have one of them, I’m sure James has seen it but for avalyn2 though. This was my main (hand me down) PC in the early 00s

finite basalt
#

And you can unbrick every model now using a usb to uart adapter

#

Love it 😄 I think my oldest was a Compaq presario

primal kestrel
sinful moon
#

Hah thanks, yeah it’s a 1999 Dell XPS T500, slightly upgraded/sidegraded since then

finite basalt
#

And a satellite l10 777

sinful moon
#

idk how I decided that running Windows 2000 was the best choice for it in the early 00s but it completely was

#

That machine is way more fit for 2K than XP

finite basalt
#

I have actually used a laptop that shipped with windows 95

#

My grandad might still have it actually

primal kestrel
#

i had one of my dad's old work laptops with that

sinful moon
#

Yeah I used to have significantly older hardware, but I had to hold on to the “best of” when I moved out for the first time

primal kestrel
finite basalt
#

That's fair, I genuinely fear moving out now

primal kestrel
#

😭

sinful moon
#

rn I have this Pentium III, a Pentium 4 Dell Dimenson, an iMac G3, and an NTSC Amiga 500 w/ Commodore 1048 monitor

finite basalt
#

It was a zafira and a half of stuff when I moved in 2022 and I've since acquired more things, like a BBQ, a power edge and 2 desktops 😭

primal kestrel
#

one day my 3070 ti will become vintage tech too right

finite basalt
#

I currently have 2 desktops and a laptop in my wardrobe for a homelab setup down the road

sinful moon
#

used to have literal stacks of old laptops and piles of old desktops before I moved out of my mom’s place in the early 2010s lol

#

wish I held onto more, but fair many of them needed more work

finite basalt
#

I also may have about 8 phones on my bookshelf at the minute and various bomb-looking routers

primal kestrel
#

8 phones is crazy i think i've had only 3 or 4 in my life

finite basalt
#

I have 4 routers in my room currently

sinful moon
#

I badly miss my WRT54G, I’ve been thinking of picking another up

#

they’re like $5 on ebay lol

finite basalt
primal kestrel
#

i do wish i had a phone exclusively for OTP

finite basalt
#

I've a dsl ac68u meshed at the moment

sinful moon
#

I administrated the home network and ran dd-wrt and OpenWRT on that WRT54G back in the day and it was lovely

finite basalt
#

Those phones will actually be good for my dissertation so no complaints

sinful moon
#

enterprise grade features on extremely common router

finite basalt
sinful moon
#

after we upgraded routers (and I installed dd-wrt on that too lol) I used my WRT54G to teach myself WiFi cracking and etc

#

nice nice c:

finite basalt
#

I'm hoping to nick my dad's draytek router as well soon as he might be dropping it due to limits on firewall throughput

#

But for me that's perfect and I can use it for proper vlans

sinful moon
#

I did get into infosec and this stuff in the 00s but there was no real clear carrer path back then, thought it was a neat skill that I just couldn’t do anything legally with

#

worked for a decade in unrelated fields until finally hopping back into IT as help desk, and that same month…. log4shell lol

#

instantly proved myself to management that I more than kept on top of that threat and patching and just became the infosec person, signed up here to catch up lol

#

not sure why you needed my infosec life story but I do find it interesting lol

finite basalt
#

I ordered my food 😌

#

I'm glad it worked out for you 😊 I'm currently working in software dev, done it for about a year ish and hoping to pivot more into cyber security

sinful moon
#

Nice what are you getting?

#

And nice nice, no complaints there and always good to have fallbacks

finite basalt
#

Tim Hortons was open so I went for that haha

sinful moon
#

haha totally fair

finite basalt
#

They weren't serving burgers because it's 6am so I opted for a bacon butty and a sausage butty because I'm starving

#

But it's a 40-60 minute wait 😭

sinful moon
#

Also yeah I’m in the weird “self taught” kinda quandary where it’s both extremely impressive but also harder to prove for new jobs. I just need some certs to go with my 4+ years of job experience thus far

finite basalt
#

That's fair, I currently have no certs so I've got my personal coding experience, a year in industry so far and then at the end of the year another year part time and a degree hopefully

sinful moon
#

Yeah the degree part is often what HR is looking for but most people actually in IT don’t care so much as long as you know what’s up

finite basalt
#

I will say thm really helped me have something to prove in a way because I met people like f11 and matheuz who inspired me to write a rootkit for both haha

primal kestrel
#

same boat mostly i hope my work will pay for some certs then i can land something nice with security certs and coding experience

sinful moon
#

I’ve seen compsci grads who are completely inexperienced and know nearly nothing about sysadmin or etc

primal kestrel
#

🤞

finite basalt
#

It is painful watching some people on my course I will admit

sinful moon
#

lol i can imagine

#

You’re probably starting to butt up against some who were nearly iPad kids

primal kestrel
finite basalt
#

When I started the course I remember seeing people struggling to turn on the computers, its a cyber security and digital forensics degree 😭
