I am of course. It's just that for example when I study a book or a course from thm/htb I get introduced to some things. For example introduced to systemctl command and the options start/stop. But systemd as a process dives deep into how the device boots and everything. I think I should firstly learn the fundamentals of some things (lets say windows mac os and linux) and then dive deeper in some concepts I consider to be important

simple valve
#

Most of the time from what I see, people usually donโ€™t have a solid fundamental knowledge on concepts like networking, OS like Linux and Windows, applications and whatnot which makes it hard to grasp next-level concepts which are typically associated with Cyber

#

So while you work on diligently doing TryHackMe, its also good to brush up on your networking (Cisco has free courses on this), Linux and Windows, Application, HTTP, and coding

#

You donโ€™t have to be good at them, you just need to understand them well enough that you can piece together other information when you try to study on the next level

neon merlin
#

@sinful moon I installed arch last night (btw)

I'm taking a photo because whoever packaged plasma decided it was more important to include an emoji keyboard than a screenshot app and it was already midnight by the time I got to this point.

sinful moon
#

I mean itโ€™s literally like kde-screenshooter or something. Actually it probably has a more silly name, but yeah thatโ€™s kind of the point of Arch

#

itโ€™s not actually a base KDE app, you have to decide how to flesh it out

neon merlin
#

Yeah it didn't even have a terminal the first time I booted, or a file manager

#

Had them emojis tho

sinful moon
#

but also at a bare minimum, the scrot command line utility will take screenshots for you

#

KDE has a ton of moving parts, but the Arch Wiki page more than spells it all out

#

can pick and choose what to build out to your hearts content

neon merlin
#

I wouldn't even call it that hard to install. Tedious is what I'd say. Copying commands from arch wiki for 3 hours.

sinful moon
#

To be fair youโ€™re doing more than that

neon merlin
#

It installed more smoothly than when I tried Ubuntu in 2006

sinful moon
#

youโ€™re learning how and why each part fits together

#

lol thatโ€™s fair

#

although I got my start on Ubuntu in 2006 and it was pretty smooth and quickly went to Ubuntu minimal (server) installs before hearing about this thing called Arch in 2008 lol

neon merlin
#

I was fully ready for stuff like hangs on boot, hangs on shutdown, failing to launch the DE. I've had this experience with Ubuntu (granted almost 20 years ago) and Kali. But it worked fine

sinful moon
#

lol hereโ€™s a screenshot of my Openbox setup in 2008

#

dat 1600x1200 LCD even then was whew

#

lol even including scrot as mentioned

neon merlin
#

And I did learn something new. Cause I did manage to break something in the first 10 minutes. Switching to a login manager theme that is not installed but plasma allows me to choose it anyway. So its just a black screen instead of login.

I learned that the computer isn't broken you can get into tty and just start running commands. I never used tty before.

sinful moon
#

yep! fantastic experience

#

and honetly just best way to learn computing more generally, if somethings broke, figure out why and done

neon merlin
#

just login to my user in tty and start-plasmawayland. I think some people even prefer to do it this way. Rather than use a login screen

sinful moon
#

yeah you donโ€™t have to use a display manager, they look pretty but I literally just did startx for over a decade lol

#

kinda appreciated booting straight into the tty for both troubleshooting and also memories of a summer where I used nothing but TTY on a beautiful Sony Trinitron CRT back in high school

#

lol I had everything I needed back then, my music app, my instant messaging, web browsing and more

#

with screen back then or tmux these days, aka terminal multiplexers, aka basically terminal window managers, you could do tons with a single tty or ssh

#

still critical to even my job since I use tmux while remotely administrating my Linux servers. And when you accidently disconnect from ssh, this sessions stays open to reconnect to

neon merlin
#

now I need to look into plymouth to get a nice boot up and shutdown.

sinful moon
#

lol but why hide all the amazing boot scroll text?

sinful moon
#

Plus these days they flash before your eyes in 5 seconds lol

sinful moon
neon merlin
#

I'm not sure if it's accurate but I decided to plunge into arch in the end just because it seems plymouth and hyprland are designed for arch. Or thats what I got from most of the documentation and guides being written by arch users.

sinful moon
crude stump
#

Ngl nothings more annoying when your trying to look up a room on google and the only thing you get is 100 different stupid write ups on that room

sinful moon
#

Fedora does lead a lot of new Linux efforts and usually when they adapt them I do as well

#

but I have 0 need for Plymoth

#

I wanna see the awesome text scroll of Linux boot every time lol

#

PipeWire however is one I adopted as soon as Fedora made the switch

neon merlin
#

It's not necessarily the removal of the scrolling text. But my computer flashes a lenovo logo on the screen on boot and shutdown. I was told plymouth can change that.

sinful moon
#

Thatโ€™s actually a logo set by programing UEFI API stuff, yes it can change it but also like who cares?

#

Thatโ€™s just for the UEFI boot side before Linux starts

neon merlin
#

Also the 5 second text is funny because I've seen plymouth configs where they have to specifically slow the boot down to show a logo animation

#

things just boot too fast now lol

sinful moon
#

Yeah Plymouth doesnโ€™t actually make as much sense as it did when it came out

#

I remember even in the late 00s I was getting like 15 second Linux boots on HDD

#

now itโ€™s kind of just insane how fast Linux boots

#

of coruse however, this scales depending on distro and how many freaking daemons youโ€™re loading

neon merlin
#

I tried encrypting my drive this time when I installed too, never tried that before.

#

So you have to type a password into tty on boot

sinful moon
#

full LVM stuff?

#

yea

neon merlin
#

yeah

sinful moon
#

if youโ€™re comfortable with that and etc, no need for the display manager then

#

although I would recommend you setup your startx aka ~/.xinitrc if youโ€™re still using xorg to actually load your command so you can ensure you export your profile and etc

#

if youโ€™re on wayland than ignore me

neon merlin
#

Yeah I just have wayland I think

#

Right now after I type the decrypt password in tty the KDE login manager automatically loads.

sinful moon
#

yeah literally no idea, you should know what you installed there lol

#

if you did ArchInstall, even then I canโ€™t tell you, and you cheated yourself slightly

neon merlin
sinful moon
#

Nah then youโ€™re Wayland for sure, yeah no worries

#

the xorg stuff is for XWayland fallback

neon merlin
#

plasma-meta is supposed to be more "complete" than plasma-desktop. But like I said there's not even a terminal or a file manager in the meta pack

#

meta is what I installed

sinful moon
#

Yep itโ€™s the literal base install of KDE lol

neon merlin
#

So I can't imagine how stripped down plasma-desktop is

sinful moon
#

instead of desperate KDE components. Thereโ€™s a ton going on in the KDE ecosystem that all builds up on it

I know it can't run a 2amp heater element for 6 hrs. So it has to be less than 60wh/12ah . Wondering about the best nondestructive way to pen this down without ordering extra gear

Well I'm not even sure, I went away from archwiki to do the encryption stuff. And that guide had me create the 1GB swap but not even format it as Linux swap

if you want, i can share my strategy. basically: 3 backup USBs, a backup microSD, and a cloud backup.

USB 1: Hard drive failure use case. This one is frequently backed up with my latest stuff because i keep it conveniently close by. it's for if my hard drive fails.

USB 2: Fire. In my location, fires are the most common natural disaster. i keep the fire backup off-site in case my home burns down. i previously had it in a fireproof safe rated for 1 hour, but i gave that away.

USB 3: Theft. A regular USB drive I hide in my house. In case of a home burgularly/invasion, I can quickly restore all my data.

MicroSD: Hidden inside of a hollowed out nickel. I won't disclose where I keep this backup. Kind of like my 2nd to last worst case scenario.

Cloud Backup (container and separate KeepassXC files): a free public cloud account that will maintain access for about a year or two without any activity. no payment required. if i lose everything, and have to move, etc. i can simply login to the service (no MFA on purpose) and download my encrypted container with all my data and the separate passwords and MFA database files for keepassxc.
