lol for some reason I have one workstation in a fleet of about 400 where VSS is just completely broken for some reason, it breaks installers who try to make system restore points. She just needs a reimaging but it’s been low priority lol
Disabling System Restore and reboot fixes the installs 🙃

I would just be cautious about turning the machine off durning the attempted System Restore. I doubt it will touch your VM but it’s a tricky operation
You’d give up and do a hard power off, but that is not an action to take lightly. It’s just after 12 hours this is already questionable as it is
Just as long as it doesn’t corrupt the actual NTFS filesystem, you should be able to mount in a Linux live enviroment and recover your VM HDD image
Realistically though, I should hope you can rebuild whatever you have on this VM in the worst case of no bacups
your THM config and etc is trivial, and reinstalling infosec packages is always a good time and re-enforces what you actually need
but not to beat a dead horse, this is why actual backups are important. If you have important Linux dot files and etc, there’s really neat systems where you can back them up to private (or public) github repository and more

I still think your best chance if it doesn’t come back up after system recovery is to use Linux to mount your NTFS drive and recover the vmdk or whatever HDD image it’s using. Ideally config files for it as well

That’s a tricky challenge at the best of times to determine NAT hosts from their IP and etc. However if their port is exposed then yeah, that kind of seals the deal, just hard to confirm that’s the right host without this info about potentially exposed. Yes potentially, there’s some apps which are specifically designed around crafting and sending your own custom frames. However I do not know quite enough to validate if this will be successful beyond your basic premise

sudo tune2fs -c 1 /dev/sda
I haven't used tune2fs so I cannot advise further
