That kitty is sooo cute

high mulch
#

yeah, I had an english bulldog, she was a rescued dog. I don't particularly like that breed, because of that same reason. But she was very lovely, so sad to see the stuff they did to her. She was kept for breeding, and some of her teeth were filed, so she didn't bite the male.

I had to take her to the vet so euthanise her, so she wouldn't suffer more. She was old.

Yeah, this I took her to the vet recently. Like one month ago or so.

Because of the uncontrolled breeding, she developed issues on the lower back, and they tend to have heart issues as they get old.

She barely walked, and I think she was developing a heart condition. So we took her on time, at least she was given loads of love when she was with us <3

exactly

me who has less than one year experience in sysec is suppose to write ticket to senior dev who forgot its not 1990 anymore

crude stump
#

I’m still in schooling but my dream is to work in the cyber industry especially defense, but if I was leading a cyber team I would make it mandatory that every month or so there should be mandatory video that employees have to watch on different ways the company can be compromised by there mistakes. Also making sure to switch up the videos to current mistakes that other company’s faced, that put everyone in jeopardy because of these mistakes.

#

Of course it’s impossible to complete eliminate the possibility

#

But making employees more aware of the impact of some mistakes can cause, they will be more careful and aware.

pliant needle

woah there

blazing granite
tribal yacht
#

cant I use dualboot to get both linux and windows on my machine xD

polar spoke
#

you're not wrong, which is important to note

#

adding difficult characters certainly does may it a lot harder for someone to bruteforce by increasing the keyspace via increasing the characterset

pliant needle
#

yeah but its easier with a vm or something if the specs can handle it @tribal yacht

#

you can create snapshots and revert to an older state if you break stuff

polar spoke
#

the main point about it not being much more secure though is that naive bruteforce is already pretty much impossible with just normal ascii characters at even really short lengths

#

8 can be annoying, 13 is infeasible for nation states

blazing granite
polar spoke
#

Password12345! is NOT possible to bruteforce, for anyone

#

but it's still weak

#

the deal is that no one should really be doing naive bruteforce in basically any case anymore

#

better attacks have been around for a very long time and have gotten really good

So I've got this old Netgear nas that I've not used in over 10 years. Plus some old desktop computers. I want to set up a way to access my files in one apartment from my other apartment or anywhere in the world.

Can a nas be configured to access from outside or is it local only? Do I need a computer to act as server?

gritty fern
pliant needle
polar spoke
#

well, no assumptions really need to be made about the password other than the core assumption: human generated vs machine generated

#

that's really where the line is drawn

boreal scarab
rough barn
boreal scarab
#

@wooden totem You too lol

pliant needle
#

i see netgear nas and 10 years old. my first thought is to ask when the trashman comes

gritty fern
polar spoke
#

sure, you can do this, but i would strongly recommend against overcomplicated "Algorithms" or "Systems" as they are often much weaker than you think they are

#

it's very very easy to make a password that is sufficiently uncrackable and still easy to type in or even remember

slow helm
polar spoke
#

this should be an expectation imo

boreal scarab
blazing granite
polar spoke
#

why not just use a password manager?

slow helm
polar spoke
#

it's very easy to make strong passwords that are not long and difficult to type but are still very secure

rough barn
#

Are all these passwords immune to a $5 wrench attack?

polar spoke
#

again, i caution this type of conjecture without knowing why it's strong

#

thinking "no one could figure this out" is not a measure of strength

stray tapir
#

I suffer from password fatigue cuz i have like a bunch of long ass passwords

polar spoke
#

and don't suggest doing this because it can lead to making compromises elsewhere

pliant needle
#

thats horrible lol

#

password fatigue doesnt happen if you use a password manager :>

polar spoke
#

unique passwords, yes
strong passwords, also yes
long and complicated to the point of being inconvenient to use? no

stray tapir
#

I do use a password manager

#

But it also has a very long password too

pliant needle
#

ah i understand

gritty fern
#

Whats password fatigue?

stray tapir
#

I literally just forgot it today and remembered it again

polar spoke
#

there's no real reason to make machine generated passwords long

stray tapir
polar spoke
#

they only need to be 13-15 characters in pretty much any case to be infeasible to crack and thus sufficiently strong

rough barn
#

Or someone getting the password manager

polar spoke
#

and 15 is overshooting specifically to future proof things if compute power suddenly jumps up a lot

pliant needle
stray tapir
#

I used to use an extended unicode password for discord, but I got locked out because they changed something

#

I copy and pasted and it was like: no wrong password

outer aurora
#

hi

polar spoke
#

The idea there sounds good, but i don't see any purpose in it because it's just weakening the other passwords 🤔

rough barn
#

I use a few different keyboard layouts so I hate putting special characters in passwords

#

Like for some reason Windows Chinese keyboard when in English typing mode has a different layout than Windows English

stray tapir
#

I had my keepassxc database corrupted once and almost lost all my credentials

rough barn
#

So the dollar sign now might be a different key

stray tapir
#

stored it on an external usb with 1 gig of total storage, and it decided to give out after years of use

pliant needle
#

gritty fern
#

Exactly what i do

rough barn
#

Not related to passwords but trying to learn to code on a laptop that has a swiss keyboard but set to EN(US) keyboard layout is not very fun.

pliant needle
#

not sure tbh but thats what i do too

polar spoke
#

tbh, i dont really see why not

#

but even if that is the case

rough barn
#

All the chracter buttons aren't what's written on them

polar spoke
#

there's no reason to reuse the majority of the material in each password just for the sake of being able to remember it

rough barn
#

like for example if I press the - key it makes a / NotLikeThis

pliant needle
#

cant u change layout?

gritty fern
pliant needle
#

^^

#

ohhh

pearl raven
#

Switching from UK layout to US layout took me long enough lol.

rough barn
#

z and y is also swapped but that's not really noticble since I touch type

#

when I press the z key I get a y

polar spoke
#

fair enough, up to you to threat model and do what you think is sufficient

I wonder if anyone has designed a password cracker for China that takes advantage of the fact 888 666 and 999 is likely to appear in most passwords

#

These are "lucky" numbers

gritty fern
#

Pretty easy tbh

stray tapir
#

666 🤯

gritty fern
#

Would take me like 10 minutes to modify my existing brute forcers

rough barn
#

666 in China means something is very based

#

its not uncommon to see 88888888 or 66666666 as a password

polar spoke
#

Asian countries have vastly more numbers in their passwords

pliant needle
#

never knew that

polar spoke
polar spoke
pliant needle
#

thats interesting

stray tapir
#

I'm just being goofy

polar spoke
#

and not just like, culture, but also specifically the ways in which they use technology influence it as well

stray tapir
#

not trying to be rude or anything, but found that intresting

pliant needle
#

me too

rough barn
# gritty fern Why is that?

Well it might be similar to email. You can't use chinese chracters in email addresses so a lot of email will be a random number string

pliant needle
#

something i learned today

polar spoke
#

for example, many asian countries are strongly biased towards mobile platforms primary or even ONLY

#

meaning that they aren't using computers with keyboards for a lot of their time online

pliant needle
#

is that due to the surveillance?

polar spoke
#

which leads to using mobile keyboards, which are laid out differently, contain different barriers to use of characters, shortcuts, etc.

pliant needle
#

oh

polar spoke
#

iirc South Korea is a good example of a country where a vast majority of online stuff takes place over phones or maybe minimal laptops

#

especially for things like banking, where the process is govt regulated and doing it from a mobile phone is vastly easier

gritty fern
#

What a knowledgeable individual!

stray tapir
#

iirc SK has some internet restictions in place to ensure people use an app to authenticate themselves to connect to the internet on some devices

polar spoke
#

correct

#

it's a "authentication" app that mandates they use a very old browser and old hardware iirc

#

unless they use a mobile device, and then its simple enough

#

so most just bank from a mobile device and skip all the hassle of using a computer for it

stray tapir
pliant needle
#

probably spared lots of damage from that attack a couple months ago

polar spoke
pliant needle
#

i think it only targeted computers, beginning 2020
