Moving the discussion here since it's a better place for it (and at the suggestion of @acoustic sand)

A few of us (at least me and @spark sonnet 😁) do not believe CTF/Puzzle standalone machines are helpful for learning. By CTF/Puzzle, I mean machines that require decrypting things like base64 crpto-code to get a flag with some crazy Cyberchef formula, or having to use steganography on an image to retrieve a password to access SSH. These are things you will (likely) never come across in a real pentest, bug bounty, or security research (CVEs).

I think HackTheBox has a much better policy for standalone machines (see screenshot). There is a way to create CTF machines that teach real-world techniques and still make it fun. I have noticed THM has a large # of standalone releases that are unrealistic and nothing close to what you'd encounter in the real world (whereas HTB does a much better job at this).

THM shines in other areas (I really enjoy the walkthrough rooms and various learning paths) - and I'm a big fan of THM overall but personally stopped doing most of the standalone rooms due to the CTF/puzzle nature of some (not all) of them.

I hope this goes without saying, but I really do love TryHackMe and is the primary platform I use and stream - but wanted to bring up this discussion to see if I'm in the minority or if others agree?

The reason why is so once the program randomly picks from a list of characters and symbols and prints it out in a password like fashion, I want to save and encrypt the password and store it in a Python database.
