For anyone interested Haiku Beta 5 is out now. Here’s me emulating it on iPad Pro via UTM with JIT.

It has a new “dark mode” feature in that there’s a single slider which recolors the rest of the UI in step. I just choose true black since this is OLED

Haiku is just an extremely neat operating system based on continuing BeOS, which would have become OS X if not for some dramatic missteps and miscommunication. NeXTSTEP was chosen instead. But BeOS and Haiku have some extremely interesting OS principles despite being mostly POSIX compatible

If you do try it out because of this post and know nothing, HaikuDepot is your package manager and has a ton of common open source software

Yeah it is actually reasonable to daily on old hardware. If you keep your expectations in check, Haiku OS is a great use of old hardware

I’ve used Arch (btw) for 15 years and it helped cement a lot of the actual Linux foundational knowledge I have. And while the package manager is unique, practically all info that you learn about Arch is applicable to all other distros. This is why the extensive Arch Wiki is useful on literally all distros.

At work? I just deploy Ubuntu Server and call it a day lol, who cares. But I wouldn’t have much more insight into administrating that server if I used the same vs Arch

Yes you will most commonly see a debian derivitive, but once you’ve learned how Linux actually fits together, you’re kinda set? Only difference is your package manager unless you’re doing something weird like NixOS which will never be in production
