#

Hello which linux distribution do you recommend for cybersecurity beginners?

crude stump
#

I like Kali

dense spade
#

(using in a vm)

mossy river
#

Kali is usually the go-to for beginners so you don’t have to setup the tools

dense spade
#

I mean yeah i thought maybe there is another one because obviously begginers won't use all those pre installed tools

crude stump
#

Well

#

Don’t use all of them?

dense spade
#

I like kali too although i don't have much experience

#

I was just asking blobfingerguns

crude stump
#

You have to learn

#

TryHackMe has a lot of stuff that teaches you different tools

mossy river
#

They’re pentesting OSes, there isn’t a beginner OS because there isn’t a need for one

Cyber professionals either setup their own or need a OS they can pop up on the go

dense spade
#

ight

jagged otter
#

i don't think you'd ever use all the tools in kali

crude stump

Prolly not

I dunno if it's just me but I also don't really see a difference in parrot and kali

They’re quite different

i have a doubt in one of the question on thm, can anyone help me with that, I am providing the link of the module also. the question is as follows

#

https://tryhackme.com/r/room/linuxmodules
the question is in sort and uniq part

"What was the index of term 'michele'?"
I wrote the command in the terminal as follows
awk '{print NR,$0}' test_1611747033664.test | grep 'michele'
and got the output as
459 michele
but it is not taking this as the correct answer. It took the answer as 2550

Ok, are you using QEMU? Virt-Manager?

You can use that qcow2 disk image for the VM's disk, shouldn't need any installation from the ISO

Hydra, I was looking at it as I was originally planning to take the campervan over the channel, and it looked like a cool place to visit. Then I found out it'd cost me like £1000 return on the ferry

naive violet

Currently, it doesn't quite know where I am

shell nova
naive violet
#

Indeed

glass nest
#

the tunnel IS cheaper, but a 6hr drive from me, and the fuel cost means that theres only about a £90 difference

shell nova
naive violet
#

Issue is, the console software is on my desktop downstairs.
GPS doesn't work indoors, although there's a reasonable chance if you're on the top floor

shell nova
#

Or what's that other town...Newhaven?

glass nest
#

Same thing, really. cost of the travel goes down, but the cost of the fuel getting to/from rises to match

shell nova
#

Maybe not that

glass nest
#

Even costs a fortune to take a ferry to Ireland. Basically, at that cost, I could fly and spend a long weekend in France and still have change left over, y'know

shell nova
#

£1000 is a huge chunk of change though

#

Are you classed differently?

glass nest
#

Especially to France. a return flight is only a couple hundred

shell nova
glass nest
#

Maybe. I think the cost is for the vehicle - regardless of if there are 1 or 5 people in it

shell nova
#

Seems a lot for a light passenger vehicle

glass nest
#

Oh yeah, but the point was to do the campervan trip. Shrug. Is what it is.

shell nova

Might need to try the off season then

I've been watching a few films recently, and some of the ones that want to look 'futurey' have projected HUD things that hang in thin air. Is that likely to become a reality any time soon? In my mind, the light needs something to hit - so I've seen stuff like it, projected onto mist and stuff

#

Just an idle musing is all, hence why I've not googled it :p

nimble jolt
#

AR HUDs have been possible for ages but they never seem to gather much traction as real products. It's possible but the general consumer market doesn't really seem to have much appetite for it

glass nest
#

They do seem inconvenient. that laser projected keyboard thing is terrible. Although with this ipad generation, maybe they'd be more used to typing on a flat surface?

polar spoke
#

imo the biggest issue with AR is still the same, user interaction

#

we can display stuff for you to see relatively well now

#

but interacting with it is still clunky and imprecise

I could see how that would be the case

buoyant tree
#

I believe they made something like that for that

#

They usually are reflected off a transparent glass/plastic surface

glass nest
#

Yeah, Even some cars have an HUD like that

nimble jolt
#

Its just a question of what benefit they really provide and like.. Cost vs productivity benefit reallu

#

They're a cute gimmicky gadget but they're not really maling making anything easier or faster or more accurate or cheaper

Yeah, besides looking good in a sci-fi war-room or R&D dept.

nimble jolt

Can I ask you a question?
I'm a high school student, and I've been selected for the city's computer science competition, which will take place in six months.
The Olympiad is in algorithms (just writing algorithms).
I need to learn as much C++ as I can in six months so that I can at least write algorithms.
I can spend 4 hours a day studying, do you think I can do it?

glass nest
#

If its JUST algorithms, and you've never programmed before - Maybe Python. Super easy to learn, and can be pretty forgiving. But ask mknukn says, C++ is fast

nimble jolt
# ocean plover Thank you! Question, my friend advised me something like https://leetcode.com/ f...

to my knowledge, Leetcode has a much heavier focus on coding challenges rather than the fundamentals of computer science and algorithmic complexity, but i Might be totally wrong on this, I've not used it very much. In my mind it's good for leaning much more nuanced and hyperspecific tricks of the trade, but I think where you're at right now you want to build some solid fundamentals and explore algorithmic complexity.

#

once you've got an understanding of how to write an algo, in whatever language, start learning about actual pre-existing algorithms you can implement. Sorting algorithms are usually the best starting place (algorithms that sort a list of values , e.g. a simple list of integers from least to greatest, or words into alphabetical order). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPRA0W1kECg

glass nest
#

And then a bit of meta-reasearch to see if you can find out what was required in the last few competitions

nimble jolt
#

the reason I'm recommending CS50x over going right into python is because learning C first will give you a better understanding of algorithmic complexity + optimization under the hood. with python, a lot of the algorithm is kind of "done for you" under the surface (in C)

nimble jolt
ocean plover
glass nest

Thats true, although it does depends on the context of the competition. Perhaps its just about getting algos working, and efficiency doesnt play part
