It's not simply, a conversation on giving something away for "free", I do not believe things should just be "free", education, however, is something that should be widely accessible to people of less fortunate backgrounds. Pirate Software did an amazing video describing piracy and how to stop it, he made his game more accessible, by use of parity price, and people ended up buying it. In South Africa where I come from the price of a THM subscription is R300, this is enough to feed a family for a couple of days. I wrote an education platform, put it behind a paywall once, thought to myself, if education is the most powerful weapon in the world and I am putting it behind a paywall, am I not contributing towards the gap between elites and non-elites? Hope that gives you some perspective on my views. I am neither a socialist nor capitalist, I just believe in things being fair. Not saying give it away for free completely, but subsidize it to a certain extent.
