Telnet, the way it's used in the room, is just being used to interact with a text based service.
You can use it for imap or smtp as well in the same way. Using it like that doesn't make it run system commands on the remote system

Well, now add to that containerization, orchestration, AMQs, secrets management, web, networking and ton of pentest software and then it will be on par with average pentesters. Requirements are ever growing.
