"Need" can mean a lot. You're gonna massively struggle trying to hack a web application without at least some knowledge of HTML, JavaScript, SQL, computer networking in general. You might finish rooms on THM despite the struggle, you might catch the flag following some memorized patterns, but you're not going to achieve true understanding of the matter, by any definition.

Of course not everything is about web applications, but that's what most people are interested in and a lot of both THM and HTB is focused on it. And even beyond that you are lost without networking knowledge.

Whether you want to prepare first and then start with THM or do it in parallel is your choice.
