Overrated? No.
If you spend most of your time in front of a computer, it saves a lot of time when you have multiple screens.

I have my main monitor for whatever I am doing and then my 2nd monitor is either Discord, YouTube or something to assist with my main monitor.
I.e. I have my Notion document on my main monitor and then the University assignment brief on my left monitor

That is why I use VMs 😊

Can I ask a question please?

buoyant tree
sand trench

# sand trench you already asked one now go ask number 2

A question for who know how the rolling codes of a Car, a garrage, etc..

Before you can help me with my question, I think you should read this before, this is a guy in Reddit talk about it:

The question is:

Garage Door Openers, Key Fobs, etc.

I know, (or think I read), that they send a unique code each time, and upon successful authentication, the garage door, for example, will give the next code to the remote at that point, so it won’t be the same as the next time, but what stops someone from β€œlistening” to the garage door when it sends back the next sequence to just know what the next code will do? How does it communicate openly over radio back & forth and yet somehow still stop anyone from β€œlistening” in and getting the information to force open it the next time?

Answers:

Not quite. you're correct in that the key will send out a code and any car that recognizes that code will unlock or lock itself. However they don't communicate much beyond that. The real story is that both devices have, for a very simplified explanation, an very very large list of codes. Both devices have this list. When the key transmits a message it will take the top code on that list, transmit it, and move on the the next item in the list.
The car will hear the message, compare it to the next hundred or so items in his list, and if there is a match it unlocks the door and moves the list down to the keycode it heard to stay in sync with the key.
Anyone listening in will just hear that one code going trough the air, and once that code is gone, it's gone. You cannot reuse it. You however can't know the next code on the list, or the next one after that, or after that, and there are too many codes to guess possible, so you're not any closer to opening the lock than you were before.
Imagine they are just counting. Key says "4", and car says "HEY! My list is on 4 too! That must be my key!"
Then the next time the key says "5", and the car says "Yes, I have code 5, locked!".

#

But if you come along and say "54" the car responds "Nope, not on the list". If you use the code "4" the car promptly goes "No, I already used that code". Then the key comes along and says "7", and the car once again goes "oh, I know that code, it is a bit down my list. The key must have accidentally called out when I couldn't hear. No biggie, 7 it is! Open!"

blazing granite
lone plover
#

I simplified it a bit, it isn't really a list, just a random number generator. Computers can't do true random on their own, but they can do "almost" random. Set two computers with the same random generator and the same seed off at the same time and they will spit out the same numbers in the same order. This is exploited in things like car keys and those one time bank pads. If both devices can reliably access a shared secret you can use that shared secret to synchronize.
If you set both the key and the car to the same seed they will generate the same numbers in the same order. The numbers will appear more then once, but will probably not appear one after the other. imagine the key and the car rolling a 50 million sided die. Maybe you'll get "42" back to back, but the odds of that are one in 50 million, so I'd not bank too much money on that bet.
So, the key generates this random number, and broadcasts it. The car will hear the broadcast, and generate a number of its own. Since they are running on the same seed they will generate the same number. to prevent you from accidentally breaking the sequence by clicking the key more then once the car will generate say, 100 numbers, and accept any of those as a valid key. It is a possibility that if you press your keys often enough the car won't recognize it anymore, you've gone too far down the sequence.

@lone plover It's interesting, but what exactly is your question? Or was it more a prompt for discussion?

sand trench
#

it is a question about how car key fobs work

blazing granite
sand trench
#

and how they handle the "random" code to be sent between fob and car

#

shadow read it all

boreal scarab
#

Smells sniff..... illegal

sand trench
#

well depends on how you use the knowledge

lone plover
# shut hawk <@889138834305064980> It's interesting, but what exactly is your question? Or wa...

"""Okay so basically it’s like this
Garage List | Remote List
135246 | 135246
642531 | 642531
934672 | 934672
Etc. etc.
Your remote sends the code 135246 and the garage door sees that and accepts it, and thus, opens the door.
If another remote tries the same code later, it won’t accept it.
The next time the remote is pressed, it’ll send 642531. If your remote sends a 934672, it’ll also accept it because it’s not too far down the list.
Now obviously, these codes are much longer than six digits, and the garage door opener will accept codes pretty far down the list to compensate for accidental presses, but overall, is this an accurate, simplified version of how they work?"""

so my question is, lets suppose i send the '642531' code, if i capture the first code which is 135246 , can i send it and been confirmed by the car, Note that the code you sent is before the code that was actually used

whole yew

I think that this depends on the depth of the research that you want to do. If a person really wants to know something through research, I think that he is 100% able to achieve it without asking anyone.
Perhaps research on a topic will lead to another research on another topic to understand the topic you want to understand, but in the end you will find what you are looking for, regardless of what sources you use for research.

I have a TR1920X w/ less than 128GB of ram running KVM under .. ubuntu 22? it boots a vfio vm which gives me my windows11 experience.

I had to turn on svx and virtualization and all those other options to get vfio working when i built it in 2019 , so im pretty sure i did that part right.

Now, I am trying to run things like virtualbox or "windows sandbox" under windows ..and nested virtualization isn't working or something because it errors out a LOT.

The hardware hacker question.
Is there a COMPATIBLE cpu option I can use which will allow for nested virtualization on the AMD TR1920X in windows x64 under kvm ? πŸ˜›
