Make sure you check their ToS and their privacy statements. Normally the ones that can assure that condition operates on some offshore countries or countries with no log retention laws

What is your idea of betray customers

rapid merlin

I guess selling data

clear jackal
#

An accident typically is an accident. Also, if you're doing legal things, you typically won't attract the attention of the Police or Feds. So, I guess my question would be, why do you need a provider that doesn't "betray" their customers. VPNs also aren't an end all be all of security, they just move your endpoint.

crude stump
#

well the accidental data leaks is kinda inevitable.

Could someone please verify if I have understood Diffie Hellman key exchange?

#
  • We have 2 people => John and Eve
  • John has his own private key => A and so does Eve => B
  • John and Eve want to communicate securely using symmetric encryption
  • In order for John and Eve to create the same key, which they will use for symmetric encrypted communication, they must agree on some common information
  • They add that common infromation with their secret key and make a public key, which they then exchange via communication
  • They then add their secret keys to that public key and both create the same public key
  • They can now communicate using symmetric encryption
#

This is how I could explain it to myself after reading about it in Wikipedia

clear jackal

Genuinely curious, do you work with infrastructure?

#

I don't specifically per say, which is why I am asking, but have dabbled

molten sky
#

Nah I just go down 3 hour rabbit holes when something interesting comes up

#

lemme grab something about how it measures...

#

(obviously some can function differently, but normally it's induction)

clear jackal
#

It's not the measuring part that I was referring to, it's the access part.

crude stump
#

What would infrastructure be. Like systems?

clear jackal
#

Access/denial of access to electricity

molten sky
#

yeah but all they can do with access is see how much power you're using or tell it to report a different number

#

they can't turn it off

#

it's literally just a measurement device, no control over the circuit

clear jackal
#

I know that's not true

molten sky
#

well it can't turn off what it physically doesn't touch

clear jackal
#

The hack I was referring to earlier took over the devices and spread like a worm through the lab letting the "actors" do what they wanted

#

I'll see if I can find it, but pretty sure it was a Defcon/Black Hat talk

molten sky

do you have a ref? cause that wouldn't apply to 90% of types but there could be a subset that has some weird stuff added

#

@clear jackal Seems that some companies are beginning to add those mechanisms to their meters, but that's not part of the metering itself

#

that's a bespoke function unrelated to the tracking

clear jackal
#

tbh, I'm not sure we're on the same wavelength. So idk how to respond.

molten sky
#

actually just found a good video explaining both functions --- hold on

clear jackal
#

I was responding in reference to access given

#

Not the metering itself or anything like that

molten sky
#

yeah what i was saying is that traditionally these "smart meters" were often literally just meters
the disconnect part is being added more frequently than before, it seems

#

similar to how water meters are often read remotely but they also don't have a remote disconnect

#

( for those meters that have the remote disconnect feature built in, then yea, is no good )

#

we actually just had our PoCo come and swap our meter out for one last month or so
the fucking asshole pulled the meter while I was working

#

thank god i have a ups at this desk

clear jackal
#

Not even the disconnect part on the meters tbh. The feedback from the meters is a metric that gets sent to, and I am blanking on the name, a centralized location where they control how much energy is being provided to the grid. Through spinning up and spinning down generation facilities to meet demand.

molten sky
#

eh... not really but i see where you're coming from

#

electricity isn't generated based on those meters, just as they weren't before --

clear jackal
#

That belongs after my previous message

molten sky
#

the meters are only for billing purposes

clear jackal
#

Not to the ones you just sent

#

The smart meters are an endpoint that provides data like in an enterprise environment.

molten sky
#

si, but the data isn't used to determine how much power is generated

clear jackal
#

Not on its own, no.

molten sky
#

it never really is - that data would be too delayed to be valuable

clear jackal
#

@cosmic pendant you did your PhD in infra right? Do you have any additional insight?

molten sky
#

power use changes instantaneously - gen plants just work to maintain 60hz and gradually scale up and down as the voltage and that changes

#

it's less about "what did our meters say" and more "we just dropped x% voltage and need to step up generation to meet this new demand"

clear jackal
#

OK, I'm not sure why we're moving goalposts. I don't think I said that it would a) be instantaneous or b) was the only metric.
