Oh Dansu, I feel for you man. I've been through this exact conversation so many times on here ๐Ÿ˜„

hardy mica

to conlcude , i can't say how much time you need before going into bug bounty , some need months , some needs years , some needs decades

#

but at least start

hardy mica
#

without knowing what subdomains are , THAT ARE THE LEVEL 0 of computer science , you can't go for a bugbounty

#

now i can go back at AIO calling me old

naive violet

Everyone goes for bug bounty because they see people making money

Does anyone have a 1440p or 1600p laptop display, how is it running Kali on that and handling display scaling so everything is at a readable size?

molten sky
#

not a laptop but i was running 1440 for a while
kali scaled fine within its vm

#

not even sure if it (the xfce one) has fractional scaling or not, but it looked fine

gray flare
#

My laptop is old so I'm looking to upgrade.

I'm trying on my desktop with a 4k and it's acting really weird how the resolution and scaling in the Box is interacting based on how I adjusted my host from 4k to 1440p, 1600p, and back.

#

Setting the Kali to 1.25 or 1.5 works in the opposite direction of what it would do on the windows host so things get smaller. I adjust the box window size and the VM reverts to 1080p scaling the resolution to the window size for 1920x1015

This isn't how Vbox ever acted on my laptop

molten sky
#

"Box" as in...gnome boxes? or generic "box" for just the machine

#

vbox

#

there we go

#

that's what i was looking to clarify

#

idk what the deal is with virtualbox nowadays but i know that there's a bug with xfce where it doesn't always play well with auto-resizing (by not playing well, i mean it just doesn't do it) and such with kvm's vdagent --- it needs a minor patch and then it's perfect

gray flare
# molten sky idk what the deal is with virtualbox nowadays but i know that there's a bug with...

I noticed VMware handles Kali better but a quirk about VMware is if I open a smaller window over it and hover my mouse back to the VM, the scroll doesn't act on VMware unless I click to bring it to top.

My desktop is a new build and even the 4k display is new so I have a lot of setup to do. The crisp text is great but I need to know I can make Kali and other VMs scale right before I get a 1440p or 1600p 16:10 laptop.

molten sky
#

windows host or linux?

gray flare
#

Windows. I could switch the new laptop to Linux when I get it but my home desktop needs some Windows specifics.

molten sky
#

was gonna say try kvm/qemu but nope

#

you mentioned the quirk about having to bring to focus -- the qemu agent doesn't even require you to escape the vm to bring the mouse back to the host ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ just move it off the side like a normal window

#

ik there are some setups that do that with vmw/vb but they don't seem common

gray flare
#

I don't mean mouse back to host. I. General of if you a smaller window floating over a larger window, the noise scroller acts based on mouse position instead of what's the active window. VMware requires me to click it in order for the mouse scroll to act on it. I think this is called mouse scroll on focus

molten sky
#

yeah i was just adding onto what you said, reminded me of that realization

#

but if you're on windows you can't use kvm anyways, lol (for obvious reasons)

gray flare
#

For the desktop I can always just put the VM on the old 1080p native display. It's more important I can run Kali at a readable size on the laptop display and I'm fine with running a Linux host on there.

molten sky
#

i will say --
I don't normally bother with fractional scaling nowadays anyways

#

i don't need the start button to be twice as large or the firefox logo to be either -- i know what's where ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ i'd rather the tiny lil bit of extra space anyways

I got an upgrade from a 10750h and an RTX2060 to a 12700h /w DDR5 and an RTX3060 for free about a year out of warranty so I didn't care too much ๐Ÿคฃ

So these were the emails exchanged, they then called me to say I "probably wouldn't get a replacement" as I was out of warranty so I cited the consumer rights act to them and explained that I'd sent it to them for repair, they failed to fix it, it's wasn't the first time I'd sent it back to them for issues (each time they failed to solve the issues) and told them I expected either a refund or a replacement

They responded saying that they weren't trained for legal and would pass it on

glass nest
#

Yah, Lots of them forget that the repair itself likely has it's own statutory warranty

Hi James,

I have been asked to contact you with regards to your faulty Dell Gaming G3 15 3500 Service tag # [Removed]

I have attached a quotation detailing the specifications of your replacement system. I would like to offer you Dell Gaming G3 15 5520 as a replacement. Can you please check this configuration and confirm this is an acceptable replacement?
You may need to pass this to your internal IT procurement for a compatibility check if your company has a personalized image installed.
Note : Please do not consider the price details mentioned in the attached Quote, The cost remain at Zero Value .

Once we have received your approval we will proceed and book this order at the earliest.
Please note the warranty in this quotation will not apply to your replacement system. The remaining warranty from your original system will be transferred to your new tag once your faulty system has been returned to Dell. This is an automatic process which we are unable to change.

We also request you to please confirm the shipping address as mentioned in the quotation in order to avoid any delays.

I trust this is to your satisfaction, please do not hesitate to reply with any queries or questions, or to progress your Quote to an order.

Note- Please Do Not Book the order from the link which provide in quote, Just review the quote and reply us with confirmation. We will book the order under Zero cost.

Thank you for choosing Dell.

Thanks & Regards,

was what they sent shortly after and I just told them that the replacement was "suitable" as I didn't want to risk them changing which model I was getting haha. Was the first email where I said "many thanks" instead of regards. Was right happy with myself

I've had absolutely no problems with this laptop either thank god but I've sworn never to buy a dell laptop again

glass nest
#

My work Asus Nitro 5 has lasted 5 or 6 years with no issues. But i only use it for office stuff, so not surprising

finite basalt
#

Yeah, I had all sorts wrong with my old laptop, they put the ssd in a airflow deadspace, through a 1mm thick peice of copper on top with no TIM and thought it was adequate cooling (it wasn't, the ssd reached 90c)

glass nest
#

mmm warm data

finite basalt
#

They sent it back same as before diagnosing issues that didn't exist, I sent it off saying the SSD was overheating and the laptop would shut off to protect it.. They sent it back diagnosing "failure to boot" which they fixed by changing the mobo and then "failure to install windows" which they said they fixed by reinstalling windows ๐Ÿคฃ

glass nest
#

I guess the techs just run through a standard list of checks and resolutions

finite basalt
#

But they diagnosed non-existant problems ๐Ÿ’€

#

and how do you fix not being able to install windows by reinstalling windows ๐Ÿคฃ

glass nest
#

Using ancient Dell secrets

finite basalt
#

That was from the first repair where the SSD was overheating, I later had issues where the laptop was killing the SSD controller and they'd stop appearing in any devices. It wasn't heat as I fitted proper heatsinks and the temp dropped by 40c. I wrote a full set of notes saying what I'd done for diagnostics, what I thought the issue was and a not explicitly saying, do not just replace the drive as it will die again in a month.

They ignored it and changed the drive and then 4 days after getting it back the charger was tripping because of a short somewhere on the mobo ๐Ÿคฆ

glass nest
#

thats probably why they assumed you had a whole team of IT geeks dignosing it

finite basalt
#

Nah they knew it was just me, I'd stated that I had done my own troubleshooting countless times when they argued with me or would try and troubleshoot it and then essentially tell me it was fubar after an hour of doing what I'd already done

#

I got asked if I was an engineer because I told them I'd disconnected the charging port (that they argued was soldered to the mobo, it wasn't) and tested it with a multimeter to check for shorts ๐Ÿคฃ
