What channel is that?

past sparrow
#

I mean, doing things for sake of doing usually leads to nothing, it should allign with your goals

#

I set up homelabs so I can deep dive, hands on experiment and break things as I want

#

trial and error on things to see if things work as I expect them to, or not

#

Or you can do what I witnessed someone doing in a company live environment

polar spoke
#

I mean that not to be rude but there’s no point in doing something if you don’t have a reason for doing it

past sparrow
#

download the malware and start "studying" it in production environment as an administrator user in unsanitized environment

#

some DA-s are way too mad

#

eh, it does not need to be conditional

#

just my colleague today wondered how we all have time for things like that, he gets home and does not want to even open computer

crude stump
#

Depends

#

What side are you leaning too

#

Blue team or red team

past sparrow
#

No one needs to learn anything, you are studying out of your free will πŸ™

chilly veldt
#

why use the money to buy devices to set up a homelab if you don't know what to do and it just lays there and your money is now gone

past sparrow
#

You can min-max by teaching anything you learn to someone else

crude stump
#

Oh wait y’all are talking about like a actual like server lab

crude stump
#

I was thinking just a virtual machine

buoyant tree
#

somehow I thought thm subscriptions now costed 2000$

chilly veldt
#

which can be a server/computer running virtual machines

crude stump
#

Ah yeah

#

That’s like a professional home lab

#

If you just wanna pentest and stuff a simple virtual machine is great

chilly veldt
#

yeah, then that becomes a virtual lab (it will become a lab and not just a virtual machine if there's multiple virtual machines running in a simulated network)

#

not a homelab

#

imo

sand trench
#

this is your reminder that:
invincible season 2

crude stump
chilly veldt
#

if they are on the same network

crude stump
#

Interesting ima try that

#

And when you mean same network as in same ip address?

chilly veldt
#

same exact ip address will not work

#

cause 2 machines can't have the same ip

crude stump
#

Oh

wild rose
#

same network or vlan

crude stump
#

Makes sense lol

#

The ip address is like a name tag for each computer

past sparrow
#

another alternative is to take your old junk, and adjust them into the lab components

chilly veldt
#

for example in my vmware workstation, I have a test network, with the subnet 10.10.1.0/24 which means any virtual machine I'll boot with that network gets an ip address for example 10.10.1.53 and can talk with any other virtual machine on said network

#

(this talk just made me remember to request a new license to my workstation pro)

past sparrow
#

speaking of all those labs made me realize I have some labs I should do

#

but laziness go brrrrr

chilly veldt

yeahh, I just ordered the new license lol

#

Its convenient to have school's network courses be based on Cisco

#

we go up to CCNP here

chilly veldt

same

#

quite literally studying CCNP right now in school

past sparrow

I would be doing it, but I chose to take Cryptography instead, which I find actually to be better choice, the professor is kind of hardcore so definitely learning something there

chilly veldt

chilly veldt
#

it was a mix between danish, norwegian and estonian CTF players that went on the bootcamp

#

Oh it's the largest cybersecurity live-fire exercise among NATO countries, each country putting out their own team

Thought it might be case for other countries as well

chilly veldt
#

haven't heard about it, just looked at images

past sparrow

well, its an event I'd recommend anyone if they have an opportunity

#

It's not often you can do defensive response against red teamers in live and vice-versa

chilly veldt
#

understandable

#

I might go to estonia again this year πŸ˜…

past sparrow

every team is given totally broken infrastructure and then "have fun" πŸ˜„

#

Oh, what are you going to do this time?

chilly veldt

CTF'ing

#

you know CTF Tech?

past sparrow
#

I don't know directly, but they seems very familiar

#

Maybe someone I know may had participated in it

chilly veldt
#

there's a nordic-baltic ctf happening each year, and finals are in estonia

past sparrow
#

That's nice, Estonia sure attracts the IT stuff here

#

Is there a prizepool?

chilly veldt
#

yeah, there's usually fun prizes

past sparrow
#

What's the target audience usually? I read out this line at the moment Aimed at young people, who are interested in the cyber world, but have no previous exposure or experience in the field.

chilly veldt

it's for people between 15-24

chilly veldt

past sparrow

What is it like?

chilly veldt

it's really fun, it's a 3 step competition, qualification, regional finals and national finals

past sparrow

Maybe just me, but what discourages me is the nature of competition, I find myself to be very anti-competition

fair enough

#

I like it cause I can push myself

macs arent really a closed system like IOS you can still download programs outside of the app store. The real reason why there`s less viruses on other operating systems than windows is because the market share is too low for it being worth it. I dont know the exact numbers by heart but the ultimate goal of most viruses is too infect as many machines as possible so why would they go for an operating system that has a <10% market share

Actually what increased the program "speed" was skipping MIME checks on the files altogether, and instead, passing all of them to extraction methods with try/except. If the file corresponds to the extraction method e.g. from_pdf(), it will work.

#

The MIME checks were mostly to display the number of {type} files read, at the end of execution. At first seemed like a important thing to do, like VERIFY if that file is indeed a {type} before passing it to extraction.
