This shits getting heated lol

remote prairie
#

Was more talking to Cipher, but ehhhh it's mostly a catch all term for "your brain is wired in a way that is Not Normal" more than a euphemism tbh

grizzled crystal
#

We should probably avoid political topics yeah

bitter quiver
#

Well as ADHD riddled( and in my case also anxiety) brain users we live in an era full of...well proven tools and methods. They don't even turn to pills anymore, therapists often have other psychological and habit based techniques they use for most people.

Almost no one wants to do it though because it takes time, energy, and is uncomfortable for awhile. Like getting in shape after being out of shape for awhile.

remote prairie
#

Apologies, dropping the topic

grizzled crystal

I think the neurodivergent stuff is okay since it's people's experiences

# bitter quiver Maybe it's a generational thing.

I think it might be. I genuinely don't know anyone ever who I've spoken to who is "getting adhd benefits" or something like that. It's not really a thing. It's how people think disabled benefits are some crazy privilege but really it's like...you have enough money to eat and maybe get heating

All going back to the overmedication of children because they have a bit more energy than others

# bitter quiver I can get that. I have fibromyalgia. Pain is literally my life daily. I haven'...

Yeah I totally get you. I dunno, I'm of the opinion that if you need some help you should be able to ask for it. I also try to do the things I want to do, but I try to listen to my body as well when it comes to pain and fatigue and stuff. I've spent many a work day laying on my couch instead of getting work done lol but it's not a big deal because my employer knows that when I'm up for it, I do great work. It's not something I abuse but in the age of work from home it's a privilege I have

so it won't reach the intermediary server because it's blocked

I need to setup a listener on my end and connect to it via the intermediary

#

yeah so I've got into the first container and have to move to the next container which I should now (with a bit of work) have access to the ssh server on the next container

#

although I can't do it from this machine really because it's:
a. alpine linux so I'd need to find static binaries to put on (easy)
b. it's not a full fledged terminal on the first and the user isn't setup for ssh in (www-data)

It is a container focused CTF that ended a few days ago but some of it is still available to play with

Good thing is, message interception is nearly impossible because when an attacker tries to intercept, it causes the qubits to collapse from their state of super position, immediately leting the victims know someone tried to intercept

#

Primer is a masterclass in low budget film making imo

#

they made that film for like 1000$

#

and used nearly, if not, 100% of the footage they shot

#

the commentary and "behind the scenes" info for it is great

sinful moon
#

Most inexpensive scifi ||time travel|| movie I have ever seen by far and super impressive

polar spoke
#

some shots they did sneaky because they werent allowed to film like the gas station shot

#

iirc it was filmed somewhere between Austin and Dallas

zenith lagoon
#

yo peeps I was going through the pre escalation room and I found this "nano /etc/shadow will print the contents of the /etc/shadow file. We can now use the unshadow tool to create a file crackable by John the Ripper. To achieve this, unshadow needs both the /etc/shadow and /etc/passwd files."
I dont understand why we need to pass both shadow and passwd files, is it not enough passing the shadow file as it contains the hashes of the password ??

polar spoke
#

unshadow just expects it

sinful moon
#

/etc/passwd contains the username information while /etc/shadow has the actual password hashes. As he says you don’t technically need both, just having that username info is helpful

polar spoke
#

plus, without passwd, you'd just have hashes

#

and maybe an ID

#

but not necessarily the "user" info that passwd contains

zenith lagoon
#

for eg user2:$6$m6VmzKTbzCD/.I10$cKOvZZ8/rsYwHd.pE099ZRwM686p/Ep13h7pFMBCG4t7IukRqc/fXlA1gHXh9F2CbwmD4Epi1Wgh.Cl.VV1mb/:18796:0:99999:7:::

polar spoke
#

i think these days it does but it wasn't always that way

sinful moon
#

I’d have to pull it up to check, but you’d still get useful group info and more from /etc/passwd anyways

polar spoke
#

to be fair, JTR and unshadow and such have very long history here

#

in the old days, passwd contained all of this info and shadow didnt exist

sinful moon
#

should just be covered as a matter of standard enumeration anyways

polar spoke
#

then shadow was created to hold the password hashes since passwd was accessible

polar spoke
#

these days, i'm not sure why both exist in the forms they do besides a handful of permissions related deps and history

sinful moon
#

Dat Unix legacy and compat is why lol

zenith lagoon
#

wohh thanks guys

polar spoke
#

yeah pretty much

#

for some context

#

JohnTheRipper was released in 1996

#

so there's a lot of history behind it

sinful moon
#

mhmm, that was one I had the chance to grow up with in the early 00s along with Ophcrack back in the day. I’m sure you pre-date me there however

#

Meanwhile 20 years later we still have NTLM hashes flying around the networks lol

polar spoke
#

lol

polar spoke
#

i have history with JTR and OphCrack but like, not as much as some lol

sinful moon
#

lol I’m slightly older but that says nothing of my experience in comparison. Just a hobby as a teen and a job/passion as an adult finally

polar spoke
#

for some fun timeline context, I've got a little over 10 years using hashcat

sinful moon
#

And yeah lol, pretty much the same, just tried Ophcrack a bit and didn’t do much digging. There were way fewer practical legal use cases back then to test on

#

lol and developing but very nice!

polar spoke
#

oh legal use cases? yeah not many

#

use cases though

#

I found quite a few πŸ™‚

sinful moon
#

lol indeed

polar spoke
#

Ophcrack was nice because it was self contained and there was a bootable iso version of it

#

boot, extract, crack or transport for later cracking

#

little stopping you from doing it if you had hardware access

sinful moon
#

As a teen I mostly just focused on wifi cracking and setup my spare WRT54G for some fun, but I played it safe. And wasn’t a ton of resources for the rest

polar spoke
#

haha yeah, i did a fair amount of wireless work as well

#

still do but that's still not popular enough, flipper zero or not, for it to be worth much professionally

#

some pentest shops do some wireless stuff but overall its still a niche

sinful moon
#

Yeah something about RF and encryption of such is kinda magical to me still and fascinated by it

polar spoke
#

it's awesome stuff, no clue why no one else seems as concerned about it yet

#

the stuff ive seen floating around is.... yikes

sinful moon
#

Yeah the Flipper Zero hysteria is kinda hilarious

polar spoke
#

i know

sinful moon
#

Yes I have one, no you can’t easily steal rotating keys from users, what are you even talking about media?

polar spoke
#

if people actually knew what was possible right now, they'd be losing it

#

instead we only get "flipper can HACK CARS" and other nonsense

sinful moon
#

Yep exactly what I was thinking

lavish shell
sinful moon
#

I did see basically just a headline of a Tesla phishing attempt, and iirc it’s just getting the user to auth your malacious attempt using the phone app. Via WiFi which notably needs an addon

polar spoke
#

but also, you can't hack a car with a flipper lol

#

at least, not in the implied way

#

it's all hype, not much of substance behind any of it

sinful moon
#

Yeah I think a lot of media fell for dumb TikToks trying to look impressive, but lying about the capabilities

polar spoke
#

yeah, and there's been a lot of "recent" research that is just rehashes of old well known attacks but suddenly its scary because its on a cute little device instead of a slightly larger and more complex looking one

sinful moon
#

For sure that too lol

lavish shell
#

like the one driving with q flipper zero and never having to stop for a red light because "flipper zero made them change" to green

polar spoke
#

the "chinese researchers find apple airdrop zero day that reveals your phone number!!!!!" nonsense that just turned out to be the same AWDL stuff released as part of Apple_Bleee in 2019 was hilarious to me

sinful moon
#

Brings to mind the recent simple UEFI attacks shown off by stacksmashing. Wasn’t a PoC of UEFI bypass, but one for that particular chip lol

polar spoke
#

everything that's old is new again

sinful moon
#

Mhmm

polar spoke
#

oh god that one was awful to me

#

it's such a well known and used attack

#

and everyone freaked out assuming it was new for some reason

#

as if it hasn't been around for years lol

sinful moon
#

Yeah lol, great content and well stated for the scope, but the media treated it like it was new indeed

polar spoke
#

i am 100% certain we see PCILeech make the rounds again soon

#

and probably a handful of the wireless attacks Samy Kamkar has shown off will get ported for the flipper and freak out the media
