If you guys ever get bored, GPT is actually pretty fun to toy around with. And once you figure out how to split it into teams, you can do a lot more. Such as have red team override what the original GPT would say.

No, the first levels arent hard and very quick. As you go up in lvls it becomes more difficult and a boss fight every 20 levels or so. The difficult part is that if you die, you start right back at 1. There is no in between saving or reviving or anything

Well, even though THM is amazing, and wouldn't ever have bad files, it's usually good practise to use a VM when downloading files like that. worst case, take a snapshot before downloading/doing anything and you can revert to it if anything goes bad.

And the general rule with Excel, If it's a file from an unverified source (and you've scanned it) don't enable macros if it asks you on startup. If it asks, then go have a look at the macros to see what they do

however, this could be me overthinking your specific situation 😄

if it's a THM/staff developped room (esp. blue team walkthroughs) we do have phishing rooms that "look" malicious that we developed but have some form of killswitch to prevent anything actually happening. This is to make it look realistic but also safe. If this is the case, it should be clearly advertised in the room. However, yes, best practice is to treat it as malicious. THis is why we provide the VM in the room, and suggest using your own VM if you wish to analyse it outside of that and general safe cybersecurity practices (like esqy said - not enable macros etc)

If it's from devved by someone at THM, it's safe, community rooms are also checked. If it's a private room then it's down to the creator alas

i started the "rootme" practice room and ended up getting stuck on catting "user.txt" after reverse shelling the website. did everything i was supposed to leading up to that point but every time i went to output the text file, i was hit with permission denied.
i side stepped it and went through to escalate privilidges and gained root, cattd "root.txt" without issues and went back to get my last flag... still denied even at root... sucks to be stuck on 90%.
watched a few walk throughs to help me get it, just incase i did something wrong, but nope, just denied for some reason. any ideas?
