black, white, cyan and magenta

bitter quiver
#

Old tech was crazy with it's limits

flat hamlet
#

Heyo can someone help me out setting up my VM ? i'm stuck with the company's VPN

bitter quiver
#

I remember reading about how one of th eearlier versions of RAM were mercury filled tubes.

#

They relied on mercury slowing the "wave" of data and then reading the bounce back

shell nova
#

well, dpended on the palette and resolution

bitter quiver
naive violet
shell nova
#

for a decent resolution (320x200) you had 4 colours at a time

silver sky
shell nova
#

yup

bitter quiver
#

Two solid responses lol

#

99.99% of the time a VM is most definitely not allowed on company hardware...

#

The other % knows how to set it up and has properly access to

flat hamlet
#

So i dont own a pc -> i use attack box to learn -> i want to have smthing that isnt reset each time where i can keep logs -> i installed a VM -> i'm stuck with the SSL Certificate not going through the company's VPN

Somebody has lost their rgs laptop, but they're more worried about their own stuff.

shell nova

Now its between Running a VM on corp hardware where its an i7 and 32gb of ram and be fast and efficient, or run MX Linux on a 1ghz amd processor from 200x and suffer eternal pain but its legal

silver sky
# bitter quiver As it should be lol. Access control is life.

Well our computers and systems are different to everyone else's.

IT doesn't touch our stuff. We purchase it from our supplier.
But we have a few IT computers for general office stuff.
Ours is dedicated to CCTV, access control, fire and intruder alarms and ANPR

shell nova

I don't use it and it causes more problems than it's worth

silver sky
silver sky
shell nova
#

should be fine

bitter quiver
#

The place where I first became a manager the IT lady gave me admin rights to all my teams PCs. Not for anything tracking wise, but so I could deal with printer drive issues and software update issues because our IT was outsourced and the idiots couldn't update the most basic things. I remember one time on the phone I just asked the IT guy to put in his credentials, and then sit there watching remote as I fixed my printer issue.

"Sir that's the wrong drive for your printer"
"Bud, trust me. It's the same family, the direct driver isn't installed and y'all wont add it. This works."

silver sky
#

Our CCTV computers don't connect to the internet so are dreadfully out of date

flat hamlet
#

A 2018 Huawei could handle it ?, or wait why not just use a VM on a steam deck thats actually a good idea

bitter quiver
#

CCTV was fun because I got to experience great stories. LIke the "Serial Pooper". Dude who would fly off the freeway up to our building at 2am, sit out a white bucket, take a poo, then leave.

To be fair he never left traces and took the bucket with him.

#

Still though

shell nova

I wonder about the deck actually, might be stupid enough to work

silver sky

I wanna see someone use a deck to hack now

flat hamlet
#

to not let that pc go to waste, do you guys recommend MX linux and download the tools i need, or straight up Kali but then debian is quite heavy on resources

silver sky
#

Couldn't you just load Kali on it

shell nova
#

debian's alright tbh

bitter quiver
#

They have kali on a pi, which you can stuff in your bag with an antenna and a mobile battery charger and control through your phone and easily just chill and "play on your phone" while actually doing work with it.

shell nova
#

I have kali on a VM with reasonably low resources

flat hamlet
#

Oh when i say low, i mean LOW lemme show y'all

shell nova
#

yeah 2 vCPUs and 4GB RAM

#

and that's more than enough

bitter quiver

Like a year and a half ago tore the UCL ligament in my right one. Had surgery to bolt it back in after 7 months of running around with it. Recently in Sept the steering wheel ripped my left thumb back, similar type of painand issues. Gave in for an MRI after ~4 months. Now I have an apt Monday for the results to see if it needs surgery.

Child catapulted himself into my repaired right thumb over Xmas and it's still sore but usable. Surgeon I'm seeing now said the thumb joints are stable and thinks I should be good. Eventually will be doing PT on both after we find out if left needs surgery.

flat hamlet
#

Academically i learned by asking questions to tutors, in an age where information is easily accessible theres no need to LOOK for it

#

GPT is like a tutor

glass nest
#

Course theres a need to look. It's just easier to do so 😄

loud marlin
#

we write books to save knowledge nad pass it on...

mossy river
#

But there is. You're in a field where you have to actually look at things.

glass nest
#

Hahaha, Trusting AI (Or an approximation therof) to accurately teach you something. You know how AI works, right?

flat hamlet
#

Im asking for basics, i didnt know how internet worked a month ago, not deep stuff like writing your own scripts

loud marlin
#

if you teach your AI that 2+2=5 and ask him how much is 2+2 he will answer 5

flat hamlet
#

but to understand ELI5 basics maybe

glass nest
#

It learns from what other people have posted and said to it. If you changed enough resources online (Or withing the AI research pool) to say the sky was green, then it would confidently tell you that fact

loud marlin
#

||dumb AI shit||

mossy river
flat hamlet
#

So you would spend 50hours reading Offensive Python book to find how to detect a certain OS parameter rather than asking GPT where to find that Parameter in 2 minutes ? im not arguing btw, im genuinely open and listening to everyones opinion

glass nest
#

It's a similar reason as to why Wikipedia is not accepted as a direct resource when citing. You can cite the LINKS from the wiki page, if you use that info, but not the Wiki page itself as it's unreliable because anyone can edit it

loud marlin
#

as i said before that GPT is nice for shit and giggels and to get soem fast short answer... for rest, learn to use brain'

mossy river
#

It's not about being the quickest, it's about actually understanidng what you are doing.

loud marlin
#

50h is joke small time to read book

glass nest
#

The 50hrs will teach you How and Why. And if it takes you 50 hours to find something minor like that, then... maybe you're in the wrong field

mossy river

I have mentored a 60 year old, don't think you are late to the field.

# flat hamlet even with a 9-5 on the run and only having 2 hours to myself everyday

You shouldn't make excuses to take the easy path because all it does is make you want to take the easy path more.
The start of your journey is the most important because the amount of effort you want to put in at the start reflets the amount of effort you will continue to put in.

Having the ability to read through resources and find the information you want is not just about learning the fundamentals, it's about your mindset. Someone that always wants the easiest path will make it harder for themself in the long run.

If I go to the gym and do my exercise at twice the speed I normally do, I will be putting in all that effort for nothing because it won't double the amount of gains I get, all it will do is make me exhausted.
