A skilled locksmith can just look at a key for a few seconds and have a decent chance of reproducing it and if you get close enough you can use impressioning to finsh the job.

rapid merlin

It took me a while to truly grasp it. My mother tongue is Russian, but when I was learning German and French, it felt like I was battling against a wall.

#

It didn't make any sense.

#

But once you truly understand the underlying principles behind why X is structured that way, it gives you a huge edge. For example, French grammar can be quite complex especially certain rules if you tackle them wrongly.

#

In French, forming adverbs by simply adding -ment to an adjective isn't as straightforward as adding -ly to an adjective in English. Sometimes you can do it, but sometimes you can't. Additionally, there's no direct equivalent to English -ness, which you would attach to an adjective to form a noun. For example, 'ugly' is laid, but 'ugliness' is not *laidité. It's all quite counter-intuitive (doesn't make sense).

Absolute beginner -> Python just to get basic ideas of what programming means and acquire basic notions. More complex stuff like memory allocation or will resonate a lot more and be way more approachable if they already have an idea of what programming is.

# pearl badge Actually, why not ask the learner themselves ? You could have a discussion with ...

Well, the student's interest lie in data science so I was gonna teach him python anyway. I was thinking if I start teaching him Java it'll be easier for him to grab the OOP coding as well because if I teach him python and then switch to Java to teach OOP then he'll have to learn the Java basics as well. I don't want to overwhelm him with the hard stuff starightaway. What's your opinion on that?

pearl badge
#

You can do OOP with python

#

Just teach him python imo

shell nova
#

Python for basic algorithms, java for oop algos and sructures

pulsar spoke
shell nova

Once you get the basics down they're mostly the same everywhere

devout palm

Yeah, if they are interested in data science

#

Python is suitable

shell nova

shell nova

Sure

pulsar spoke
pearl badge

But in the end they're going to work with python even for that isn't it ?

pearl badge

Maybe I'm wrong, I didn't work in the field

Start with procedural code

that's where the recursive fun begins

Let's keep python aside because I'm teaching python anyway. What language should I use to teach the basics, procedural stuff and OOP?

shell nova

Don't complicate thinga

I started with C++. It was not that hard. And I began to go deeper and deeper. Now i have strong fundamentals on how memory and stuff works. Beneficial for reverse engineering.

IMO, best way to learn programming is to practice

This is very important

Stick with python, there are some sites to practice on in the pins in #programming

If you watch stuff all day, you're not doing anything but memorize stuff

TendoRonin, you really have all you need to answer your question. Now you need to think long and hard

Then Java for the oop stuff

Functional programming is a different beast

That's why I never suggested Clojure

At the end of the day, the language doesn't matter

Teach concepts, not languages

Algorithms, data structures

How a bloody computer works

pulsar spoke
shell nova

Some

It's all structs in the end

Just with more or less sugar

pulsar spoke

Man, teaching is tough

shell nova

Then you end up with encapsulation, coupling, etc

#

Try to find a copy of the gang of four

#

Ancient, yet foundational text

#

I'm getting ahead of myself though

pulsar spoke
#

I just want to introduce this guy into programming, that's it

shell nova

Sure, then start small. Variables, control flow

Functions

devout palm
shell nova
#

Basic procedural stuff

#

Implement fizzbuzz

#

Though not the enterprise version....

#

Basically, solve basic problems

pulsar spoke
#

What if I teach Java and Python together. Then I'll be able to show the difference between statically and dynamically typed languages.

shell nova
#

Introduce basic structures: trees, lists, maps

devout palm
#

No, don't do that

shell nova
#

Typing inst important yet

devout palm
#

They might confuse things

shell nova

Foundations first, then specifics

#

Typing is a language thing

It'll come naturally, especially with oop

I've been working on Try Hack Me for around a month now, and I would like to have your opinion on something. Computer security is a never ending learning process, that requires both conceptual understanding of what is going on, and great technical mastery of your tools and a plethora of environments. Have you guys ever gotten frustrated by how little details can ruin the whole thing ?

A few years ago, I was trying to exploit a .htaccess misconfiguration vulnerability on w3challs. I didn't know about burpsuit and I wrote the HTTP request. It didn't work for days, during which I looked at the RFC and other ressources, only to find that it was because a request like this had to be closed with 2 CRLF.
On Tuesday, I spent time on an easy box and I couldn't use the hashdump function of meterpreter because of the shell type. So I tried to change shell, different ways, and when I watched the write ups they just used another tool.

What I like is understanding. I like when things are neat and abstract, I read some documentation by microsoft recently and it was so clean (You will find an example attached). Do you guys ever experienced the same thing ? Do you have any idea of how to reconciliate the fact that I'm more comfortable with abstraction and cybersecurity ?

Basically you can never do cybersecurity in you head and expect it to work perfectly. You have to get your hands dirty
