@heady nova Telephones were hacked using it. Ye olde phones used tones to represent info. each number dialled was a slightly different tone. 'Phreakers' or Phone hackers found that certain tones that are not on the keypad were used by engineers to test the line and stuff - So they built boxes to generate those tones. They had various uses, and it's interesting to look up what they did. Now - Someone found out that the free Bo'sun Whistle that was a free toy in Cap'n Crunch had a tone of 2600hz. When it was whistled down the phone, this signalled to the telephone switch that the call had ended and left an open carrier line which was exploited to get free calls.

Hence why the Hacker magazine is 2600 🙂

And why 0day has a public style phone on the wall in his house 😄
