Hi! When using a Kali Linux in a VM, what IP should I use when connecting with THM rooms with tools such as netcat?

The OpenVPN is setup and running on the host machine and I am able to connect to THM rooms with the Kali Linux guest OS

The problem now is that I just can't seem to find the right IP to use to put into scripts that connect back to netcat

The VM Settings > Network states that Kali Linux is 'attached to NAT'

I could not figure out how the Linux switches worked. The tutorial stated sudo openvpn <.ovpn location>, but I could not find out if I was supossed to run this everytime or how to turn it off again

The GUI on Windows seemed easier and seemed to work for the Kali guest OS as well

Guys, I really do not understand what is going on. I have been trying to connect through the openvpn following so many guidelines but I am unable to connect with it whatsoever. To be more concrete, I have followed the instructions by the THM (TLS handshake failed), used troubleshooting from github, fully upgraded the platform, and also applied some of the commands found on pinned messages section but still I find myself not getting something right. Strangely enough, when I connect to another network, connection is being established instantly. Is it possible that there are any kind of restrictions from the firewall or ISP or any other particular relevant issue? Can anyone help me?

That makes sense, but not entirely sure how I could reverse engineer this without attaching it to a debugger that can understand windows programs, such as Immunity. Like I can't execute this in the Linux VM since it wouldn't work. So I can't launch attacks against it and monitor its behavior to identify the exact offset that the program crashes at for example. I could launch BoF attacks against the running service, and when it crashes, stop/start the machine. But I will still need to potentially identify an instruction to inject malicious code into, or identify bad characters, and I don't think you can do those things without a debugger

I think I might be able to just launch one of the Windows 7 from a different room and do it that way since machines in all rooms should be able to talk to one another. I just wish that for this specific room, a Windows 7 VM was also provided, similar to other rooms. Because you can't get a Windows 7 ISO from Microsoft anymore, and I don't know how much I trust downloading a copy of the OS from some random site.

if anyone else is still having problems with the VPN after going over the steps in the pinned message, try regenerating the config file on the access page. It's how I managed to resolve it

it looks like your VPN client is trying to connect to the server using an unsupported cipher. i'd google that "failed to negotiate cipher with server" error and see what you come up with. there's probably a switch you can use to force a cipher that the server supports

it looks like you need to add 'AES-256-CBC' to your VPN client's ciphers.... it looks like it even gives you the switch: --data-ciphers, then the full string given in quotes after that.

I've had a similar issue with sublime text. It's not a proper APT installation: it was something i added manually.

i ended up uninstalling and removing the trusted key, unfortunately.

i didn't find any other option. but don't take my word for it. Maybe there's another solution

docker is great. iirc, there are other docker packages available from APT, one being docker.io

Hello again, i have managed to bypass the error 404 code but now when i run openvpn from my VM on the website it says i am connected but my VM is not even runing the openvpn as it errors out

Oh even when i shutdown my VM the OpenVPN connection is still enabled

So when i run openvpn command on linux it errors out straight away. But when i check the webpage access it says that i am already connected. Even when i shutdown my VM it still runs somehow.

Hey,

Recently OpenVPN has updated their client.
This update has outdated our configurations and will not allow you to connect to our servers.

To see if you are affected by this problem, follow these steps:

1. Type openvpn --version | awk '{print $2}' | head -n 1 into your terminal
   If it returns "2.6" or "2.6_git", this means you are using the newest version of OpenVPN.
   If it says something else, you are not affected. Please check the pins for other OpenVPN troubleshooting steps, or ask a community member for help.

2. If you are using version 2.6 of OpenVPN then, do the following:
   Replace the cipher AES-256-CBC line in your .ovpn config with data-ciphers AES-256-CBC

To do this, you can use the text editor of your choice, or simply type nano filename.ovpn into your terminal.
Make sure not to edit anything else, and save it with the same file name.

Then, re-run the VPN with openvpn filename.ovpn. Let me or any of our community mentors know if these steps have not worked for you and we will troubleshoot further.

Anyone else have an issue with the AttackBox for OpenVAS room running out of space while pulling the containers? I also tried pulling them to a Kali instance on AWS and got the same result. I then tried it on a Kali VM running in VirtualBox (hosted locally). The host machine just got very hot and noisey then sort of died... 🤷‍♂️

Yeah I checked them out to make sure I actually had enough space and everything I've seen including the Kali site indicates VMs as configured should be fine. However, there is obviously something I've not understood if the docker pull is filling up the disk before finishing.

i'm having a recurring problem with windows rooms where the target machine just seems to go offline for a few minutes. happens for walkthroughs and ctfs, but only windows machines. i'm using openvpn from my own kali VM. i get no indications that anything is wrong with my internet or vpn connection, and its been perfectly stable for many weeks with linux vms. have tried disconnect/reconnecting/regenerating-vpn/rebooting/you-name-it. also tried a completely new vm on another computer with another internet connection and the issue persists. it does seem to be stable from the attackbox so i cant entirely blame this on the boxes themselves. must be connection related somehow. i have tried restarting the boxes and that helps for a few minutes, but then goes back to disconnecting off and on for ~5 minutes. help?

Hey! I'm having trouble getting meterpreter sessions. The session gets stuck on sending stage and nothing happens. However, I'm able to catch the shell with nc. Have you guys encountered this before, if so how could I solve it?
As soon as the boot2root tries to connect, it moves into the next step and gets stuck on sending stage eventually with the message seesion # is not valid and it will be closed.

Right, so you have to specify that you want to connect on that port, by default when using http it will try to connect to port 80, using https by default connecting to 443.

Hi all, is anyone else having issues with the VPNs this evening? I've tried EU Reg 1, EU VIP 2 and US East 1 and they all are dropping my connection every few seconds. If I try and get credentials for EU VIP 1 I get the 404 page not found error.
