Complete beginner is a good start but you can also follow a walkthrough for the junior path. There's some on YouTube. It definitely helps when you get stuck or if the material seems way above your head.

I'm from teaching institutions since I got the feedback before that I can't use thm's kali machine as files will be automatically deleted every 6 hours I'm using my own kali machine and when I'm trying to upload I have the issues so I'm not sure whether it satisfies the expectation??

yes, anyone can upload vms but vm conversion/upload issues are pretty common, that's why they recommend using a windows/ubuntu server os,
as the conversion process is nicer to server distros IIRC

Most likely not, most people run kali on a virtual machine and using openvpn to connect to the thm network, including myself. But maybe try changing the network settings of your VM, maybe it is the cause of the issue

The easiest would be to try connecting to the thm vpn via openvpn from your host machine, if you get the same error there, then it's most likely not because of your VM network settings

I've just had an interesting thing with Burp Suite in the Attack Box. I've got a target VM with an IP ending with .0 (10.10.197.0 to be exact) and Burp Suite always said "Invalid target" when I wanted to start the intruder. I've terminated the target VM, restarted it, got another IP, ending with not-.0 (10.10.xxx.38) and Burp Suite works like a charm. Is this a known limitation/bug in Burp? (Thinking of old machines, I can imagine that Burp is still considering .0 invalid cf. https://stackoverflow.com/a/14915309)

because the only interfaces that kali sees are tun0 and eth0

you don't set "kali" in monitor mode, you mostly need an external wifi adapter with an NIC(network interface card) that supports monitoring/packet injection(if you're really interested I'd reccomend the alfa adapters/tp-link wn722N)

Using wsl, Windows Terminal (Windows 10), Ubuntu and Kali.

Ubuntu: I can connect to THM VPN, ping etc. no worries.

Kali: can't ping anything! Any ideas? - feels like kali wsl is locked down by default?

Run ifconfig and make sure you don't have multiple tunnels open e.g. tun0 tun1 etc. if you do, you can use ifconfig down tun1 - also try to Regenerate the OpenVPN config file.

its quite strange. network is fine with the kali VPN off, but with the kali VPN on (using the openvpn config file), I can still ping local network addresses, like my router and other PCs, but cant ping www.google.com or a google IP address, so its not the DNS that's the issue.

ok, so I figured out how to get it to work. on the IPv4 and IPv6 routes, I had to check the 'use this connection only for resources on its network' box. I rebooted the computer and I can now access both THM resources and internet websites. It was what you suggested. Just took a bit of digging. Thanks again.

is there a list of rooms you can ssh into for the paths, or can I assume that any room that gives me a 'permission denied: (publickey)' error means i'm not supposed to ssh into it? ssh is running on those rooms, but so far ive only been able to ssh into some of them. right now i'm on Authentication Bypass and can't ssh into it

Hey, I am doing the owasptop10 [Severity 8] Insecure Deserialization - Code Execution.
I am at the part, where I modified the python script to match my VPNs IP taken out of the https://tryhackme.com/access as I was instructed to.
I put everything in between the ' ' into the encodedPayload Cookie value, refreshed the page and it ends in an http 504 status code.
The nc listener in the attack machine is not giving me a reverse shell.

It turned out, that the tutorial is misleading, as the IP that I was supposed to use in my script is not the one that was shown to me under: https://tryhackme.com/access.
Instead it was the IP shown to me when I scrolled all the way up on the Excersise page.

I am currently working in OWASP Top 10, I have SSH'd into my kali machine and have started the machine for the task I am working on.

The task involves downloading a database from a website.. I am a bit confused on how I can do this solely through my openvpn connection.

For example, I can open the split view on thm and navigate to the webpage and download the database and then access the database through my terminal that is connected via openvpn.. But I am not sure how I can do it completely through my terminal? IHope that makes sense, thanks for any help.

the -T0-5 flag is super useful to select your timing and speed it up with either -T4 or -T5 of course there are the min rate and other options you can change to increase the speed too but the timing option is far the easiest to use and needs the least tweaking

and breaking up the scan into multiple scans can help the speed a lot too

Hello guys! I have a problem; since my kali heats up and closes my poor laptop I decided to use kali in VM. However I haven't been able to do it yet. I have tried unetbootin & ventoy to create a bootable windows usb disk but it says the usb is not bootable. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I'm stucked atm. Have you tried regenerating the .ovpn file?Are you still a premium member, because I had to regenerate mine when wasn't on premium

The access page is not reliable to verify if you are successfully connected to the thm vpn, to verify that you either try to open 10.10.10.10 in your browser or curl 10.10.10.10/whoami. Also, only if a machine doesn't reply to ping, doesn't mean there is something wrong, especially windows machines most of the time don't reply to ICMP pings.

I'm able to ping 10.10.10.10 as well as run curl 10.10.10.10/whoami and get correct results. Pinging/ssh to any room doesn't seem to work across two different machines (windows and mac)

Been able to make it work by regenerating OpenVPN configs in the past but nothing seems to work now
